Last weekend we were in Brest, about to go up the Aulne to Port Launay to escape strong NE winds in the Rade. We mentioned this to the boat moored in front, who said they had tried to go up but been put off by cables hanging from the old suspension bridge which is being dismantled in situ.

We set off and sure enough only about 20% of the roadway is left, at an odd angle, with a cable hanging down below, spanning the gap, no warning signs but obviously reducing the air clearance. We reckon we need 18 metres to be happy. The bridge, and the new one are 27 metres, but that cable looked very low in the centre. We motored close to the bank slowly and cleared the cable at its highest point........so all good.

I asked the loch keeper at Guilly Glass, he said it was temporary, but did not know its height! So if anyone plans a trip up the Aulne, don't be put off, but go cautiously in case its any lower as they remove the last sections.

Seems very odd to us that the marinas etc had no notices about the work.

Port Launay lovely, still free to moor but 5Eu for the leccy.IMG_2711.jpg
