I heard a BBC radio series recently that covered the J and J scandal about talc and asbestos mineral contamination.
I'm not sure it was a scandal, until the point there was documentary evidence that the, possibly specific, talc being used was the cause. I believe the legal action was restricted to the US. Others may have been concerned but took no action. One replacement was corn starch. A big user in the UK was Cussons though I don't know if they used the same talc source as J&J in America. America is big enough to have 'local' talc. Some of the UK's talc came from China some from Australia.

There are many fibrous products that merit investigation, for example ceramic, insulating, fibres. But its not only fibres, carbon dust generated at steel works is carcinogenic. It was a big problem about 40 years ago in Australia - but, as far as I am aware, did not rear its head in the UK - identical environment.

I don’t think you can buy talcum powder anymore, they are all made from maize starch now. So cheaper to just buy cornflour instead. I never liked to use it in bilges though as I was afraid of mould and cockroaches. The cheap blue paper roll sold in DIY shops works very well instead.

That water level hasn't changed since I started checking.

SOLVED! I should defrost and clean the fridge less often, which drains into the bilge. Who would have thought? This also explains why it was fresh water on the one occasion.

It's a top loader, so the seal is less important. But, I did pour loads of warmish water in to speed up the de-icing of the cooler plate.

So you've been looking for the source of the water that you tipped in there.... :ROFLMAO:
On my previous two boats, the automatic bilge pumps worked, so defrosting the fridge never had any knock-on effects. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Major, major progress today!

The bloke on the boat anchored near me is an electrical genius. He spent an hour aboard my wreck today and now my bilge pump works.

This evening, I tried to buy all the rounds, but failed, but did manage to put two bottles of wine into their backpack, so a minor result.

Ga da ga da ga, says my bilge pump, all controlled by a switch.

Cheeers to Richard & Sally on SV Selkie.

I failed to mention that my solar panels were charging intermittently. Richard, from SV Selkie, also sorted that issue out.

It's such a pity that they are leaving tomorrow, because it's only fair that I buy another few rounds for them. I've tried to twist their arms to stay, but they are determined to head off tomorrow.

It's because they can't keep up with you !

Can't you nobble their boat so they have to stay a bit longer or are they really worried about your electrical repair list.

Oh dear, the latter hadn't occurred to me

You may have a very valid point?

You have a large posse here to help. You need never sail alone.
