It's unusual to find a programme suitable for grown-ups these days and a pleasure to watch someone more interested in his subject than himself.

His book "Trilobites" is also very interesting, in spite of its unpromising title. His name is Richard Fortey.

One of the best programs I've seen in a long time. Packed with interesting stuff. Anyone who missed it would do well to view it on iPlayer

I love rockpools

D

+1 I love rock pools. I have more fun looking aound rocky beach with pools than on the sand. particularly loved exploring rock pools with my kids when they were small.

Took a group of teenagers from Calgary sailing the time they were most excited was finding a star fish in a rock pool in Pyrates Cove. I remided me just how lucky I am to see such things all the time.

I have loved rock pools all my life-always amazes me what lives there and what they get up to!A great place if you want to watch the antics of shellfish in particular and keep the grandchildren entertained..

All we have to do now is to find a way to encourage Dog Whelks to graze on the barnacles on our boats. No more antifouling!:cool:[/QUOTE

here at KTL industries Inc PLC TM we are ahead of you and have employed a crack team of scientists and shepherds who are currently working on breeding and training a new breed of dog whelks which will be selling through the internet in packs of 12. You can buy the and turn them loose on your hulls to clean off all the barnacles

the plan is working very well and they can clean a 30 foot hull in two days

just one teething problem though is that once they have finished on the barnacles they are turning on the hull itself

to encourage the dog whelks to develop a healthy appetite we mixed some labrador genes into the whelks

this encourages them to eat barnacles but once they have finished they start searching the boat for the food cupboard.

all we need is another £250,000 for the next phase of the programme which is to persuade the dog whelks to come-bye and return to their polystyrene kennels to be stored in the chiller until needed again

we feel that this is a £2,000,000 a year market

please apply in confidence if you are interested in this fascinating business opportunity

I'll have some of what Dylan's on! :)

Dylan,

How many square feet will a pack of 12 cover? A technical info sheet would be nice please?

at the moment the sheep dog whelks are returning to the box

they have learned to "come-bye"

but their appetite is not that good and can only deal with a 25 foot hull

the labrador dog whelks can handle a 30 footer - maybe 35 foot

but we have this uncontrolled grazing problem to deal with where they just wander off to eat anything they can get hold of

if anyone has any suggestions that might help then we at KTL industries Inc PLC TM have some massive rewards available

we have tried a sort of choke chain mechansim - but the drive to eat is very, very strong in these labrador hybrids

Dylan,

I have an idea for another RockpoolAPP: a small crew of trained Patella. They will be trained to come out and graze when the boat is moored or anchored. That way, all the plant (seaweed) growth will be efficiently removed from the hull. As soon as you start moving, they are trained to retreat back into their specially adapted "holes" so that they do not interfere with the hull's hydrodynamic properties.

You can market different Patella strains with different shell features optimized for different sailing needs (cruising, racing, sitting in marinas...). Glitzy versions with blue LEDs on their shells will enable you to monitor their activities.

Can I join your company?

Richard is the genuine article, a really nice chap and a great scientist, Fellow of the Royal Society too.
