Stay away from OMC, there are plenty older bayliner 2155's with this power plant but I think the 2255 was exclusive mercruiser.
OMC parts are hard to come by & are expensive as a result.
I have heard though that the volvo sx drive is a direct replacement but only heard, so treat with caution.

Some 2255.s as you are aware had 3.0L mercruiser engines, unless you want to potter at displacement stay away from these also.

Most that we looked at when buying were in need of TLC, they are very easy to bring back to pristine so don't be put off.
All parts, trim, covers, gelcote & hardware are readily available as mentioned in my previous post.

The anchor platform takes a beating if the anchor swings about & all the ones iv'e seen so far have slight stress crazing in the hard corners around the aft bench seat, but these are only cosmetic.

The step down from cockpit to cabin protrudes into the aft berth, thus only suitable for one adult, but this does provide ample storage space if not used for overnighting.

The water system is basic, hand pumped usualy unless changed to pressurised like we did, no shower in the heads & a chemical loo, as these are simple there is nothing to go wrong.

Look in at "Bayliner Owners Club" there are many 2255 owners & the wealth of knowledge & experience of the regulars is second to none.

Happy shoping

Re: Gallon a minute!

I have just bought a Bayliner 2855 ( 2000 ) with a 6.2ltr Single mercruiser petrol engine as yet I have not taken her out of the marina but am going to do some trials soon. Has anyone got a rough fuel consumption on this type? also I am being told that 20Knts is the most economical cruise speed is this true? seems very fast to me :)

Thanks for any help you can offer

The down side is the running cost, ours had the V8 OMC which is 5.? litres. fairly economical at cruising speed of about 20kts but flat out it would use about a gallon a minute!

Even with 2 X 7.4l petrols I can only get about 0.8 US gallon/min at WOT in a 13,500 lb boat (30kt). Methinks you exaggerate /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Gallon a minute!

You will probably find that 3200-3500 is most economical rev range. This should give you well over 20mph. 5.7l Merc on a 27ft Sea Ray (1991) used to drink about 18US gal/hr at 25kt and above. We typically ran at 3200 rpm. The optimum revs specd for our current 7.4l Mercs(carbs) is 3500 which gives 25mph on a 13,500lb displacement (unladen) boat with clean hull and props and 35US gph total.
