Have been looking at a number of Bayliner's 2255 hopefuly will get one for next year
some time. Anyway I thought the best way to find out about these
boats is to ask people who know.
Has anyone got one of these or previously owned one who might be
able to give me an insight of what theyre like? I have seen many
with differing engines, 3.0, 4.3, 5.0(omc) 5.7. what sort of gph
would i be looking at depending on engine, would be hoping to cruise
at around 20knts.

Any help appreciated.

2455's really do seem the popular one - many down in Poole and they certainly seem to have a good balance between just trailerable and just cruisable. single 5.0l v8 seems a common choice too.
it's good to see a model where a lot of older boats are still going.

We had one for a few years, for two people it was great.

For its size you get quite a lot, galley, loo and 4 berths - although I think it would be crowded for 4 adults.

The down side is the running cost, ours had the V8 OMC which is 5.? litres. fairly economical at cruising speed of about 20kts but flat out it would use about a gallon a minute!

At a gallon a minute I would estimate about "Mack 2" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Gallon a minute!

Totally agree about the 32, it even looks ugly on the adverisements - as someone said about the elephant "designed by committee"

What price are they? Probably could get a nearly new Sealine S34, or Cranchi Zaffiro, for less.

The more I think about it I can't imagine why anybody would want one.

I believe they are 98 - 105K depending on spec. Whole lot of dosh for one god awfull looking boat. Has to the worst thing Bayliner ever did. I dont as a rule like forward facing radar arches but this thing surpasses ugly. (In case any one is wondering "I dont like em")

Re: Gallon a minute!

Nope havent forgot. Quite looking foward to it.
New boats different class. so much extra space & much drier & more stable in any sort of sea. Dont worry about breaking down anymore now. 2 engines & such. Tons of room in cockpit for fishing but all converts to seating & sunloungers in seconds. Much faster too. 22knts @ 3000rpm 15 to 18 galls an hr. 30knts @ 3900rpm 20 to 25 an hr. havent had it @ WOT yet 20 to 25knts is good enough for me The Bayliner pulled 18knts at 3600rpm & 22knts at 4200rpm. both based on 4-6 peeps on board & lots of equipment.
I take it you mean the new Bayliner. when I saw it at LIBS I thought it was good value for money for a 35' boat but thought the rear berths were cramped. I like a dedicated main berth with a bit of headroom & privacy. Couldent really comment on its lines as I havent seen it on the water. Still think its a lot of boat for the money........ Nat

2255 great!

Owned one for 5 years, 1992 with 4.3l merc v6. sold last year.

For a couple excellent, with friends 4.3l slightly underpowered.
Lots of boat for money, looks great even at this age.

Minus points:

Limited storage for longer stops aboard.
Fridge was factory option, usually ice box.
Midship berth was only usable by 1 which means you have to convert the V every night.
"Monkey fur" linning, looks great when clean not so if stained.
Slams slightly in short choppy sea's.
Poor quality "Zamec" fittings (instead of stainless)

PLus points

Excellent value.
Excellent resale value (5 years, sold for same as purchase)
Very sociable cockpit.
Standing headroom in cabin.
Very loyal & friendly owners with a great owners club.
Besides what people may think, decent quality.
All spares readilly available from Aquatic Bay Center.

We wouldn't have sold but for the need to get a berth,we had our first real taste of day cruising with the 2255.

The 2355 replaced the 2255, If you can strech to this I would as the styling is more upto date, ensuring the resale value stays ahead of the 2255.

Consumption worked out with the 4.3l to approx 1L / 1nm.
Not so hot for extended cruising but for bay hopping OK.
You wouldn't tow a skier with this option either (190hp).

PM me if you want photo's or specific info.

Wow ! very usefull. Thanks for that.
As for
Poor quality "Zamec" fittings (instead of stainless)
I have a searay sports boat that suffers with the same poor quality fittings.
How did yours cruise, i.e. what was the happiest speed?
would i be far off if assumed approx 5 gph cruising with a 4.3, how much more fuel do you think a 5.8 might use?

Thanks again

Neil

Hi,

Yes approx 5 gph, having said that we cruised heavy for a 23fter, 2 weeks worth of stuff, so perhaps better when lighter.

We installed a new 4.3 just before we sold, on trial this was tested with light load (no holiday gear) & the performance was markedly better but we never got round to consumption figures.

The 4.3 merc in 190hp guise can be uprated to 205hp by changing the inlett manifold & adding a 4 pot carb although we never fealt the need to do this as it suited us just the way it was.

The 5.0L or 5.7L would possibly not make too much of a difference to fuel consumption, both these would be less stressed than the 4.3 & wouldn't need quite so much throttle to keep at the 22 knot optimum cruise speed.

3500 revs gave 22 knots 3800 was the max revs rating for the engine, proped just right with 17 pitch prop.

5.0L would be best suited as with friends aboard the 4.3 took a while to plane & sometimes required creative weight distribution.

But all that said it was still a great boat with the 4.3.

Be warned if you plan on towing, the advertised weight, obtained from bayliner is 1950kgs dry, in reality this was more like 2100kgs.
A suitable trailer was 650kgs so this ruled out any of the SWB 4x4s as the limit would be around 2800kgs.
Just something to be mindfull of if choosing a tow vehicle.

Thanks again for the info, no I wouldnt be looking to tow. I am not too happy towing my searay so I certainly wouldnt be attempting to tow a 2255 anytime soon. Very interesting what you say regarding the difference in engines, I have seen a number of these boats fitted with omc's
