barrel cam locks lockable from the inside

Anyone know where I can get a decent cam lock with a knob on the the inside that can be used to turn it? I'd like to be able to lock the companionway hatch from the inside. Replacing the existing cam lock with one which works with a key from the outside but can be turned without a key from the inside would avoid gouging/drilling more holes in the companionway hatch.

Seems like an obvious product but don't seem to be able to find anyone selling such a thing

Go to any decent locksmith, these things are readily available. I put one on the doors to our pool.

I went to a couple of locksmiths in plymouth when I bought the boat a few years back: no joy. Been looking online. Again no joy. If you say they're readily available I'll certainly search out a shop next weekend, although I find it odd that I can't find one online easily

Not sure what you are actually looking for exists?

The action of a Cam lock is usually one sided as they are fixed to cabinets, drawers, cupboards etc. The key lock tumbler release mechanism with the insertion of the key allows the latch to revolve. To work it from the inside it would have to have a mechanism that overrides the key tumbler for the latch to turn. If it's a plastic type companionway hatch, I think you have got a problem, unless you fit another latch as mentioned. If it's a wooden companionway hatch, why not just fit two 2" - 3" brass or chrome shoot bolts one each side at the top edge.

Nope, not those: This is the type of thing:

Thin cam which turns up into a slot in the companionway hatch. I was suspecting that xeitosaphil might be right and they don't make ones which turn with a key from the outside but a knob from the inside but I'll check on what pvb advised on the weekend

I use one like that...... I just leave the key in the outside and push the plate into the slot with a finger. Obviously that is not secure and potentially you could be locked in from the outside, but I don't moor where that is a problem.

What you want does not exist in such a small package..... it physically won't work. For the lock barrel to turn the key has to be in the lock......

No, I got what I needed from them, and thought that they might be a good contact for you. I guess you must have spoken with them and found that they don't offer what you are looking for.
