I have been trying to persuade swmbo that, at half the price, with the same amount spent again, the result could be quite impressive.

She is not convinced.

She argues that, if a boat is allowed to degenerate to that level of cosmetic abuse, God knows what the systems are like.

Perhaps she is right.
I seriously looked at buying one of these a few years ago in my abortive efforts to own a "proper" boat rather than a Bavaria.

They are very appealing (if you like that sort of thing) and the one I looked at in tip top condition was fabulous. However, the odd one that is affordable (ie cheap) like the one currently for sale is a money pit. They are very complex boats, put together with no concessions to ease of access, and most of the equipment is so obsolete you can't get bits. So it is a case of either running it in its current shabby state, forever having to fix bits piecemeal, or stripping it bare and filling it with new gear. Somebody did that recently with one its smaller sisters (a Halberdier) and spent £80k - did look nice, though, but sold for rather less than the refit cost.

There is a much better Carbineer for sale in Swanwick if you want to see what a good one looks like.

My compliments to her. She is a woman of sense.

I have one like that. She sometimes spoils my fun but her good sense keeps us out of the workhouse.
