Its that time of year and fortunately i work at weekends and so get out of it! Have asked everyone else's opinion so thought i'd ask you lot to. Dad has decided International is the antifoul for him and set his mind on Interspeed but i found out last week that Micron Extra now comes with a 2 year guarantee 95% that the antifoul will keep barnacles and weed off the hull for 2 years (or something along those lines). That threw a spanner in the works. So which one should he go for? With the guarantee and approx £5 cheaper per tin the Micron is winning at the moment!

Thanks

Apologies for being cynical but that guarantee is not going to be honoured. The boat will have to be prepared and you will have to follow application instructions to the letter - take photos and measurements etc... for evidence. Not worth it.

Interspeed and Micron are 2 different types of antifoul paint, Interspeed being a non-eroding hard antifoul which, AFAIK, works by being so slippery that weed cant stick to it whereas Micron is an eroding antifoul which again, AFAIK, contains a biocide which deters fouling and which erodes to expose fresh biocide
Interspeed is designed for high speed planing boats and Micron is designed for slower boats. Personally, I've found in the past that Interspeed is not that good and that Micron works better even though, in theory, its not reccomended for fast planing boats or boats that take the ground because it erodes but I've never had a boat that cruises at more than 22 - 24knots. If you do decide to use Micron, you need to put at least 2 thick coats to last a season
As far as the 24 month guarantee is concerned, I agree its not worth the paper its written on as it will probably have all sorts of conditions attached to it. Buy Micron because you think it might work better for you, not because it has a spurious guarantee

I have used numerous antifoulings over the years and am present everytime my boats lifted, usually after 10 months in the water. To be honest don't see much difference in the bottom of the boat regardlerss of the goo used or price paid. This year I am going to use International Uno, which came out as one of the best in this months long term antifouling test by MBM. Also it is cheaper than Interspeed, you get more in the tin (I think) and it is a one coat job. It's only meant for speeds up to 25 knots which may rule it out for speed merchants. For what it's worth I cruise around at about 18 knots on a 40 ft flybridge cruiser.
