The other day I was at anchor - a bruce as it happens

On the Walton Backwaters - you know, where Arthur sailed, splendid man

heating my cabin with diesel - red as it happened

when a mobo went past - fast as it happened

he stopped, turned around offering me a double wash and pointed out that I was still flying my ensign - red as it happens

and that my anchor ball was too high in the rigging - a folding one as it happens

is it true that I should not be flying a red ensign at anchor and that my ball was too high

was he right?

Well, what is truth exactly? And should a gentleman comment on the height of another man's ball? Fly the red ensign 24/7 (or - if you have seen Kick Ass - 25/8). But, tut tut, it will be the bruce that worried me .... stand on, sail on, keep turning left, Dylan.

My club yearbook has a flag ettiquette page (we have a warrant for a defaced Blue, so they can be sticklers). On it we are requested to make sure that the Ensign is removed, lowered or furled by dark (or 8pm in summer) and not worn again until 8 am. Perhaps that's what he was on about. But most people fly their ensign 24/7 when they are aboard & some NEVER take it down.

No idea about anchor balls, I've never used one & don't even have one aboard. I trust you reminded him of his obligation to minimise wash near anchored craft to avoid the risk of serious injury (to him when you punch him on th enose!)

Searush is near enough right about the times for the Ensign.

I see nothing to say that you don't wear it at anchor.

The anchor ball should be "where it can best be seen" in the forepart of the vessel.
(Bludy difficult to get it too high in a Mirror I'd have thought!)

As long as the sun is over the yard arm.....I don't mind if I do. Lets keep to the important stuff like whether one likes the cut of a man's jib or not. Gybe oh watch the bloody boo....too late..better luck next time.

Apparently the thing to do is keep turning right...I'm told Sheppey is fashionable these days.;)

Once knew a bloke with a blue Ensign. I think it said Standard-Triumph on the front.

I always put my Ensign away in a marina, so it doesn't get nicked.

Someone nicked my Ensign when I was on a mooring in Salcombe. I often wondered if it was someone wanting a Ensign or someone who was possibly offended.

Ensigns go up at 8am (9 in winter) and come down at 9pm or sunset, whichever is earlier.

The requirements for anchor balls are:

Anchored vessels and vessels aground.
(a) A vessel at anchor shall exhibit where it can best be seen:

(i) in the fore part, an all-round white light or one ball;

Whilst I think sailing etiquette is interesting nobody died, we're not in the forces and that pompous pr*ck is not your commanding officer. Perhaps he was trying to impress guests aboard? . . . Bet they were!

Any suggestions for inserting mobile phones into this story

was he right?

I think we need to add a mobile phone reference in this story.

Please feel free to modify accordingly.

I was moored up bows to, med style when some plonker ahoyed me and informed me that I had the courtesy flag on the wrong side. Obviously he couldn't tell the sharp end from the blunt end!
