Dont Know. Itwas on when I bought the boat, and still is. One mark every two metres. Mind you we always forget to count them, so just let out all the chain anyway!!

Forget those little coloured plastic things - the can come out. Use a combination of wire ties i.e.
one black = 10m
one black + one white = 15m
two blacks = 20m
two blacks + one white = 25m
and so on.

They're easy to replace & they're very cheap.. Need any more reasons to use them

or green garden twine
Ours were on it 5 years ago when we got it
one knot to tie it on the link and then count the knots after it say every 10m.
But Piers has got 90m to play with. We ahrdly ever put less than 15m out so he could start from 15 or 20m.
Anyway, a rather simple and nice refinement the previous owner put on was red paint (now mostly missing but still visible type unknown) on the first 2m and yellow paint on the last 5m - both easily seen if you're wizzing an anchor up and down when you're getting near the end. Saves clonking the anchor pu or straining the string tie or in our case risk running the other 50m of rope out when the gypsy won't grip it.

Re: Coloured Wire Ties

Once clipped short, a bit of naked flame will take off the sharp edges.

Re: Anchor chain marking- better option

Plastic inserts, and coloured ties are a bit lowlifey, imho.

Much better is to paint the chain, i think. Yes, paint it all. Now, so that you can identify how much chain is down (without standing over the chain as it goes down and trying to say ooh was that four bits of plastic? or five?...

10m next to chain - no paint
10+metres = red
20 += yellow
30+ = green
40+ = brown
50+ = blue
60+ = pink
70+ = no paint (ie black)

now, this is just the same as snooker scoring! And so it's easy peasy to see how much chain is down there.

Re: Anchor chain marking- better option

At £15 per tin of paint, I'll stick to my cable ties thank you (and I can't play snooker).

If you really need a reason to get rid of some cash, PM me and I'll give you my address. A large paper bag stuffed full of unmarked £50 notes will be fine. Thanks

but unmarked £50 notes would be fakes, wouldn't they? in any case, posting bags of £50 notes seems a very slow way of unloading cash. Kindly advise a more efficient procedure and it will be considered.
