Is there anythig in the rules to say that the event cannot be run in a freshwater lake eg Lake Geneva?

Re: America\'s Cup.

Not in the Deed of Gift from the owners of the yacht "America". It requires challenging yachts to be from clubs which have "as their Annual Regatta.." a race on "the sea or arm of the sea." If Alinghi's entry was accepted then their usual regatta course (on a lake) has been accepted as being on ".. an arm of the sea" in the same way that entries from Candian clubs on the Great Lakes had been accepted in the Nineteenth Century.

But Portugal or a port on the Med are rated as the most likely venue, apparently!

Not exactly

>>>Apparently it has to be on the sea or an arm of the sea.

Challenging clubs have to hold their regatta on "the sea or an arm of the sea".

We'll carry on tracking the fall-out from the Swiss win there and you can read Tim Jeffery's latest thoughts on likely venues, posted today

No, not in England

Shirley Smart, leader of Isle of Wight Council has reportedly 'put in a bid' for Cup venue. See Deckmaster comment on unsuitability of island area and indeed England on near thread 'America's Cup in Solent?'

Why not the Clyde? Lots

of space, wind and plenty of hotels and ueful harbours.

Good access and lovely scenery. Might even encourage others fro mouth to venture to the beautiful country.
