I much prefer going forwards. Or at least forwards with a bit of sideways. As opposed to backwards with a lot of sideways :confused:

I made some students the other week reverse half way up the Hamble river , and its not the first time.

Not at all. Anyone can "drive" a motorboat out on open water. You can give that job to someone who can just about see over the screen :)

Real skill - and its a great pose to be able to execute it whilst others are watching and waiting for you to cock it up - is being a capable skipper in close quarters manouvering.

Twin engine does help :)
 
its good practice, i find most people can steer ok ahead but can struggle when in the marina, when i'm giving handling tuition i usually teach forward and astern and lots of mooring up, its usefull to be able to do it when you have to.
this morning i had to reverse out of the marina with only one engine working as thats where the boat was abandoned, got other one going later
