Am I being unreasonable to expect halyards to not be clanking away in the marina?

Lots of people in the UK got a dog when the batbug was here, some of them are getting dumped when the owners are faced with a vets bill, the rest of them can't be arsed to train them, they are easy to spot, the dog will be barking and dragging the owners along the pavement, the batbug owners think that is normal, I suppose it's the same with feral kids owners.

Perhaps it's not thought about on here much that many people are not as tolerant and pleasant about others getting on to their property.

Don't take my word for it, try asking those that work in marinas.....
I think that all depends who and why someone is getting on your property! If your Genoa has started to unfurl and you are not around I think most people will be grateful if a neighbour sorts it out. On the other hand if you are sitting eating your dinner and someone starts banging around your deck and lets your halyard fly to the top of the mast they might try to keel haul you!

I’ve been “resident” in two different marinas and I don’t think any of my neighbours would object to fixing a disturbance. Equally though if I wanted a silent nights sleep I wouldn’t book a marina! It’s funny though - my street is full of very tolerant people with a nice community feel (except for one crazy person). Go one street away and nobody will even take in a parcel for each other.

I love it when a thread like this, with people starting on clearly opposite sides, comes together and produces a brilliant solution that satisfies all parties. Hoisting yapping dogs to near top of the mast with previously irritating halyards is such an obvious and simple solution that it amazes me it has never been thought of before. Two birds, one stone are delicious solutions. Well done all, a fractious debate but yet again we got there in the end.

It amazes me that you have....

Standard poodles and wire haired breeds would be excellent noise attenuators I would think. Smaller breeds could be positioned at 6 foot intervals on the inside of the mast to stop that infernal metallic clanging.

Wire-haired ones make good lightning diffuser as well.

Boat noises drove me crazy at first.. (Novice)

Probably not good practice, but I have used some small cord to pull offending lines away from masts etc and put a little tension in. the vibe that was transmitted into the boat was horrible.. it's not perfect as I am aware a couple of lines are on the standing rigging, but no adverse effects so far and I will be into some replacements for spring.
The only squeak I have now is from the stern mooring line (the bow prob squeeks, but I don't hear it.. lol). But new lines are on order..

Not as bad as baby oil tho is it. Lol..
You can but cat mill these days. Not as cruel as baby oil I’ll grant you, but imagine milking a cat.

People are really good with halyards on our pontoon, but one boat has bird scarers, thry make a noise like the tight topping lift, but louder and of course deliberately. It can be heard 200m away on a footpath. They’re also the least friendly of our neighbours.
