I am looking to move my yacht to Almerimar but when I visited there recently on the face of it the 24 hour security looked non-existant! Because I have to leave my yacht while I work in the UK, security is vital. Does anyone have experience of leaving a yacht there for long periods?

We stayed there for a week last May - security was not noticeable. The occassional drive by patrol and access to most of marina is free to public.

That said longer duration boats were on particular pontoons less accessable from road and behind warning barrier to stay out unless a boat owner. Still easy to access BUT there is large liveaboard community with prescence in those areas. If you made contact with someone staying there they may be able to keep eye on boat for you.

Our boat is near Rome and heading for Greece this year but Almerimar was somewhere we're bearing in mind longer term as base marina once we get our current wandering phase over with.

Hope this helps.

I'd agree that there's little security, but of course it's a fair way from a major conurbation so the problem of petty crime is less than say Barcelona or Malaga..
In fact it's very little different from the majority of Spanish marinas in its levels of security

There are a number of liveaboards (mainly German, some English) in the marina, who tend to congregate in nodes around the marina, if you're in one of these I'd have very few fears of being rifled.

Its sometime since I left Almerimar, but Agua-dulce 10 M east has locked and gated compounds for stoage ashore, often with livaboards on site

My yacht has been at Almerimar now for 4 years with no problem so far.

The only break-ins I have heard of have been into very upmarket motor yachts.

The number of liveaboards has been falling each year. Many yachts arriving and being left for long periods unattended.

Some yachtsmen and brokers out here offer a yacht "minding" service.

Hope this is of help. Send PM if you require more specific information.

Our boat is at the marina now and has been since September. When we return later next week we shall then be in a position to report should you wish. From the reports we have been getting from liveaboards down there it would appear that no problems have been encountered except for the lazylines needed tightening which a fellow marina user attended to.
Space at the marina is becoming a problem but if you talk to Francisco in the office he will if possible fit you in, however you cannot prebook you simply turn up with your boat.
Good Luck
Richard

these comments are from a long lime ago even Almerimar has changed with the times.
There is 24 hour patrols from the marina staff there is cctv cameras all over the marina the guardia civil pass about once every 2 hours the pontoons are fenced in.Granted the rest of the marina is open to the public and appears to be unwatched but this is definatly not the case. There is only one road in and out of the marina and 10 mins away is the guardia station. My children live here and it is more than safe for them to play out after dark Could you say the same elswere.:)

Amazed that a new member has exhumed this seven year old thread out for comment.

You are not, perchance, employed by the marina are you? Or is your username just an indication of your love for the place ;)

It is now 18 month since we were in almerimar for winter and it was a disaster!! Theft was rife especially around Christmas. It is imperative that you leave your boat in with the liveaboards and arrange for guardinage.
Also my wife had her hand bag snatched by two men on a motor-bike, no chance to chase them.

I hope that it may have all changed by now and that you have a peacefull and enjoyable Christmas.

Peter
