Yes but if you go for it then get the aerial to the masthead or use a splitter. We found that with it mounted in the cockpit that reception was poor to the extent of being useless.
 
That's interesting. Height, cut length and impedance matching are all important things mainly with regard to transmission quality.
I was going to ask if anyone has tried using a straightened coat hanger style of receiving antenna for AIS.
If your comment is the general case, then so be it.

Sorry to disagree, but we're getting excellent reception with a pulpit mounted antenna. Perhaps there was a problem with your installation?
 
Others have commented on the need for a fast heading sensor. I have always included this and accepted the additional £500.

Bit peeved though when I bought a satnav for the car though and it picked up that I was on the wrong road/turning as soon as I strayed 15m in the wrong direction. How can a sat nav do this for a few hundred pounds? Is it the dreaded word marine use again putting on the extra cost?
