Adding fuses to my batteries

Two highly trained electricians earthed off to the copper pipes in my house not checking the water came in via alkathene plastic pipe at the mains. Too much training and not enough sense. The electricity, in an emergency had no route back to ground but could have made every copper pipe in my house live. Who said a little or a lot of knowledge is dangerous.

There you go again. The electricians were not earthing via your copper pipes, they were installing protective bonding to ensure the metal pipes were all at equal potential.

Electricity doesn't need to "escape to ground in an emergency", they're electrons, not aeroplane passengers.

I've come to the conclusion you're just a troll and I need to go and press this button ...

Believe it or not, you have just proved what we have been saying all along. Re. #30 & #43 amongst others :ROFLMAO:

Couldn't make it up, could you 🤣 🤣 🤣

Surely no coincidence that your forum name is an anagram of "exams, nah"

My good friend had a problem with the started motor on his boat. The engineer was called out and he changed the starter motor but connected it so that when the battery isolating switch was operated there was a dead short across the battery. After a few seconds the battery buckled and burst, spilling acid into the bilges.
The leads from the battery were ok. There was no fuse fitted at the battery end. If he decides to fit a fuse should the value be such that it would rupture when the battery current was exceeded rather than the cable spec was?

See post #2 ?

Another book reader......why make it more complicated than it actually is. DC comes out one end, goes through the equipment and goes back in the other end. Have you never owned a DC torch with 3 x 1.5 volt batteries. Thats DC. Not really very complicated is it.
I was curious if AI had already scraped this thread and thus offering misguidance to the rest of the internet but it seems we're still safe ..

The short circuit current capacity of the battery will be very, very much higher than the cable rating. If the fuse is of the correct value to protect the circuit it will therefore protect the battery.

Thanks Alex I’ll pass info on.

I can confirm that a large combination spanner has too high a current rating for the average leisure battery.

If it helps neutralise some of the heat. 12v Planet do offer straightforward guidance under Fusing.

Looking at some of their answers i suspect they must have gone to the Shanemax Electrical Academy, for instance :

"The type of fuse you should use will be dependent on the cable it's going to protect. You will need to make sure the fuse holder can accommodate the cable size and that a fuse is available for that holder that is below the cable's nominal current rating. You can see what cable size our fuse holders are suitable for in the specifications tab on the product page."

Hmmm.........
