I can go an a week's holiday with one holdall, but the other three (SWMBO & 2 daughters), well . . . .

I have found that women ALWAYS fill the available space so I think your going about this the wrong way. Go ask how much room is on your intended saily boat and that will give you your answer. The cut off point seems to be when the space available on the boat is greater than the space available on any luggage carrrying equipment i.e Volvo Estate pulling a 4 wheel trailer. This is a case of the chain and weakest link stuff, in your case, from door to boat, which has the smallest load carrying capacity, that will be your answer<s>
