[Rant mode on] Profiles, why the hell cant people fill them in. It gets right on my T*TS thet peeps don't take time to fill in the basic parts, surely its not that hard. [Rant mode off]

Right, had a damn good weekend last bank holiday. Only down side, I lost the anchor locker hatch from the boat. So spending this weekend replacing it, when I've finished working. The last one was just a flat grp sheet cut to fit the rebated hole. Can't find grp sheet anywhere. All that I can find is perspex, or Plexiglass as its called. The colour match is quiet good. Its 6mm thick. Cutting it is no prob, but can it be shaped with a router to give nice radiused edges and make it child friendly. Also where can I get a stainless piano hinge from. The shock cord fastening on the last one was its downfall.

As usual all advice taken in good humour and a large pinch of salt. Ta very much.

Dunno..........

never used the 'skived tape', but we use them for other products. Find them good to deal with.

Can't see anything there that would be suitable, thanks for the link though. It will be useful for something else.
I chose the perspex for the "lid" because it has the same appearence and finish as the old grp one. Just really wanted to know if you could shape it with a router. I hoping to improve on the old one.
Still trying to find a supplier of s/s piano hinge though and some form of non ferros latch to keep it closed. I want to keep the original look to the thing, but don't want exposed fittings or fixings on the thing.

The hinges will be just the job, cheers Gordon, why did'nt it come up with them when I last looked! The latch I want though is something that will be concealed. I'd like to keep the "cluttered" look to a min.

Hey, I don't have ANY spare time!! Got to get a steel bar cut and drilled to fit fly wheel of new engine today and get the lid of outdrive re-tapped to take the new Oil Filler plug. Then back down the boat to replace the input seal now that I know what it is. Replace the bog floor after puting foot through it (never walked in to bog after a year of working on boat) and all the walls and shelf coz they're rotten too. Go to chandlers for switch panel, breakers and lights and look how to spend the rebate that the IR sent me this morning.

I'm working flat out!! (or is that a half-truth) /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I agree with the profiles thing especially when some one comes in aking for help and doesnt fill in their profile so we dont know where they are from or what boat they have or anything. How arethey expected to get good advice without introducing themselves properly?

Have you tried http://www.aqua-marine.co.uk

I can't see piano hinges amongst their selection but they may have a suitable catch. I got a couple of unusual catches from them recently that I couldn't find anywhere else

Re: Profiles

I posted this in response to similar question in PBO, so apologies for double posting, but Wakeup requested I repost here...

---------------------------------------------------
I'm at a total loss as to why this subject comes up so often.

Why can't people post here without posting info about themselves. I've seen threads where it's been almost suggested that if the newcomer hasn't filled in a profile, then they may not actually own a boat and shouldn't be here.

What about people who are just popping in for a look and are considering buying a boat. Why shouldn't they look and post here?

Others, for a variety of reasons don't want to be identified (they are posting from work for e.g.)

I'm quite happy to post details about myself, cos I'm used to the internet, and not particularly bothered about what people can find out.

Having said that, give me your real name and general area in which you live, and I'll more than likely be able to have your address and postcode inside 60 seconds. From this I can also search the postcode area you live in, and see a huge amount of information about the category of people living in your postcode, typical house prices, and if you are a company director or the like, a huge amount of personal information including what you earn, your share options and how many company shares you bought and sold recently etc etc. It's all public domain, so some people like to keep information to a mimimum.

A few years ago, when people were not so used to the power of the internet, I used to do a party trick. I'd take name and county of a person (if they were a Smith or other common name, a little more narrow geographical information) then show them an aerial photo of their house about 2 minutes later. Used to scare the beejeezus out of most of them

enter postcode, voila. The actual pictures you can order are MUCH higher resolution, these are just a taster.

Can get the same thing from map and route finding sites such as www.multimap.co.uk - look for aerial photo, but they all use the getmapping photos, but have advantage that you can search by town as well as postcode
