Having just purchased our new boat and decided that we would probably keep it for quite some time (at least thats what I told the Mrs) I got to wondering how many of you have had your boat for a long time and are still happy with it. Are you bothered that the design may now be dated, or do you intend to keep it but update upholstery etc accordingly.

Regards Ian

Depends on funds. Will keep it for second season but looking to upgrade come September. Will probably keep new boat for a couple of years again - and then see what the funds are like. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Quite honestly Ian, I am so content with my boat at the moment that although I do look at other boats it is only in a half hearted manner.

I know my make of boat is somewhere near the bottom of the boatowners desirability list but it has everything we need and everything works.

For me it just about getting the right balance, I get an adequate amount of boat for a cost that I am comfortable to pay. SWMBO, on the other hand, would go as big as we could afford with as much shiny wood as could be fitted in.

Any boat is better than no boat

Martyn

We will change at some stage but for now I am a happy bunny

I've had Mucky Farter for about five years. Dont see any reason to change it. New carpet and uphostery and as good as new. Cant find anything else that I'd like. The new ones just look odd and payout £££ for Odd does not appeal.

I tend to upgrade every year so don't ask me.

However, am always really happy with the boats I buy and then come up with a list of 'want's' if we go to a bigger one. Once I start down this road I always end up with a bigger boat. For now I am happy but that V40 looks very nice!

If you buy a good one stick with it. If you buy a bad one trade it in!

Cheers

N.

Yeah, I guess that I always look at other boats - some with longing! The fact is, I have got what I can afford and I quite enjoy lavishing some time on it. I reckon its getting there, or thereabouts on spec, looks and functionality.

That and the fact that I was talking to "Bob the Bosun" (who knows a thing or two about boats) when I was in our yacht club last. He didn't know I owned a Windy, and when the conversation turned to this, he almost demanded to see it. Turns out that his favourite boat which belongs to a friend of his, was a Windy 25 Mirage - and he loved it! More than that, he called all the yachtsmen over to the window and explained in glowing terms that what they were looking at was the "Rolls-Royce" of motorboats.

So, I feel quite good about my boat, says he chest puffed out with pride :)

I have heard it said that your first boat never lives up to your expectations/ needs, so far I have not found this to be true. I have spent a great deal of time looking recently, and have come to the conclusion that to get a larger boat that I would be happy with would cost me a vast amount more than is currently tied up in my own. I am the sort of person that would be no good with a 'new' boat as there would be no joinery or linings to upgrade or rebuild etc!!!!!

I liked the look of the boat I have now when they were still being advertised in the boating mags in the early 80's, so I guess I had a while to think it over!!! The bottom line for me, is that mine performs 90% of the tasks I ask it for 80% of the time, and I get to use her most weekends due to being easily handled when short of crew. I know that she is small, old and dated by modern standards, but I would struggle to find a better boat for me for the size/money.

I certainly intend to keep her for the forseeable future, perhaps I just struck lucky with my first boat?

Stick with it Ian, after all buying stuff and doing mods and upgrades, sorting problems are what the hobby is all about.
If it helps, we used to be big time caravanners, so in 2000 we bought a brand new all singing and dancing model, I rapidly got bored as there was nothing to do on it at all, so decided to buy a 1983 Birchwood 35 which we are refurbishing (75% complete now).
Now we have 12000 quids worth of caravan sat on the back drive doing bu**er
all. There must be a moral in there somewhere.

Having said that I dont know what I'll do when we finish the Birchwood, probabaly buy something bigger to refurbish maybe.

Anyone wanna buy a caravan?

Steve

Hanging onto mine until I can decide what I want.

My current suits just about every requirement, and not sure about going hugely bigger as I want something that is easy to single hand and really like the advantages of dry berthing which also limits size. Only thing that would be nice is longer range - but must come in a package that is fast and also very capable hull.

What you need is a Windy Mirage 25, I reckon. Must be several near you in Lymington.

Whaddya mean, you haven't got £80K?

Spend only enough to keep any boat in good and original condition. If feel need for newer more modern boat will go out and buy one.Shame 99 % of boat designers lost their way after 1989 to produce topsides designed in order to attract fashion victims.Never mind loss of interior space, lets shove a few more silly curves into the mix.IMHO.

Dunno, it's got elements of what I want, but still not perfect. 28 might be better.

Biggest decision is whether to stay sportsboat, or go wheel house. Will have to arrange for a look at a Botnia Targa.

You're safe there. As with cars, I tend to buy new.

One thing that puts me off the BT is it's so damn ugly!! and no idea what inside is like. I like a bit of comfort and luxury, and suspect the BT to probably be a bit utilitarian. Really need to go look at one.

So, still haven't found the perfect boat, and will keep mind looking
