I quite like that type -- the whir ever so often becomes rather re-assuing. They usually have a third wire to over-ride the auto cycle so if you know you are leaaking you can turn it on.
As for teh current draw, its minimal when not under load. I left mine for a month and the volatge drop was negligible -- probably as much due to self discharge as anything else.
A very small solar panel -will easily maintain the charge.
There are two problems with pumps like this -- and this probably applies to most impellor types I guess -- debris especially swmbo's hair ends up in the bilge somehow -- not really sure how, then winds around the pump and can stop it.
The other problem is that unless you have a nice deep sump, its impossible to totally dry the bilge.. not that mine ever is anyway..
Which is why I fitted a whale gulper as well. Sucks anything and can move water pretty quickly. no matter how much crap there is in it.
