Hi All, I have a Hurley 22 yacht project which came without any standing rigging. I need some advice on the steel wire diameter to use please. A lot of scratching around the internet seems to suggest that 1x19 316 stainless steel wire of 5mm diameter should be sufficient. Or should I be looking at a 6mm wire diameter? The sail area is approximately 240 ft (22.2 m2), and the ballast 1040 kg. I came across one rule of thumb that the breaking strength of the wire and related fittings should be 2 x ballast which suggests 5mm should do the job.
Many Thanks in advance.

Our Pegasus 700 at 23ft has 4mm all round. If going up in size you will probably also need to increase the tension putting additional strain on the boat which it may or have been designed for.

There is no need to increase the tension purely because the rigging is uprated in fact it would be a mistake for the reason you quote

True because its the same tension as long as rigging is within sensible range ....

It would only be more if the rigging was so oversize - that weight of the wire itself was a problem in sag !
