It is a fashion statement. Look at me with my new yacht with twin wheels. I always think tillers are better under about 33ft long, much less complicated than a wheel but do confuse newbies used to driving a car.
That made me laugh, thanks ?

I love the fashion statement parallel, at the opposite end of the spectrum, it brought to mind Albert Steptoe proudly recycling other peoples’ scrap. ?

Is this high-tech solution going, by some magic, to have the feedback that several people have mentioned?

I see you're being facetious, but there is no reason why such a setup could not provide feedback.

Haptic feedback is the term you're looking for, and absolutely could be built into a remote tiller.

"Facetious"? Me? No, I wasn't really, just raising an obvious objection. Feedback is what tells you that your rudder is about to lose grip and lead to a broach (though I don't think anyone has mentioned that). And I believe the games industry finances research into haptics that probably benefits work on (e.g.) remote surgery.

Years ago I read and read books on wind vane steering systems (and the early ones were so often myopic , ignorant , wrong! )

And then was finally able to produce a (mark 6?) unit that worked beautifully -thank you Marchaj , Djikstra.
I could gaze at it for hours on passage, watching it ‘sense’ quartering seas and apply corrective helm before the stern was pushed around..
Or in no apparent wind at all , with the sails slatting on a deep sea calm, yet ‘somehow’ the vane kept the boat always pointing correctly and not pirouetting hopelessly and psychologically frustratingly in all other directions!

And so to now: 25 years later..!

With reliable onboard solar and deep discharge batteries , and programmable chips and a plethora of sensors available , surely any digital interface between steering control surface ( rudder) and steering controller ( skipper) is going to be waaay smarter than a dumb mechanical set up ..

Ergo -ditch the mechanicals ?

NB. Technically my vane was an “auxiliary , trim tab, hinged, variably inclined vertical axis gear with overbalanced rudder and micro weight components , linkages and reef -able vane..” I suppose.
I was quite proud of what I built and what it did ..

What happens when the autopilot becomes inert?

Actually, I know the answers to this. On various yachts. :cautious:

I tie a line across the cockpit from windward to the tiller, works OK on a fetch in smooth seas.

I suppose with a wheel you'd tie it to a spoke on the bottom? If there was one...
