I wasn't suggesting that products made in China are poor quality. I have a number of Chinese tools/equipment which are very good quality. My comment was meant to indicate that from my experiences with a battery fire I will in future pay a bit more for a battery made by reputable manufacturer who is more likely to have undertaken rigourous tests than buying a cheap alternative

No no, we totally agree - most of the reputable branded stuff still comes from China, as does the really dodgy stuff. It seems to be that they're totally capable of making some excellent gear but also capable of making some utter tat if someone's decided they want something at a particular low price point. The key is in figuring out where on the sliding scale the product lies, I think.

I would go for something like this:

PS your Red Letter Day photo is upside down ;)

Mmm, that's pretty much my thinking. Had my eye on a 12Ah for about £25 as a nice compromise between bulk and capacity - http://www.tayna.co.uk/FNC12120-Sealed-Lead-Acid-VRLA-Battery-SLA12-12-P7478.html - eBay's a little cheaper still.

PS. Upside down? Both ends of the boat are pointy so I've decided it has no fore/aft therefore it cannot be upside down :D

I have a Lucas 12v., 12Ah. mobility battery on my 18ft. dayboat to pump out the bilges. It lasts a season with no recharging and I've had it 4/5 years now. Only problem is that the brass strip terminals are fragile and won't stand frequent connecting/disconnecting. I now have the battery in a sturdy plastic box with bullet-style connectors to the bilge pump.
