Well the business has been "cutting costs" but I had myself well down the hit-list.
Still I'm was paid well and had a strong team under me. Therfore best able to cope without me. I had one of my shift managers in tears when she spoke to me this afternoon. My team are all gutted ...... Still life goes on.
Plan is to spend all summer on the boat and then get a job the day before the kids go back to school in September paying more than I'm currently on... )
Ah well thats how it goes. I've worked for my self for thirtyfive years and made myself redundant. More times than I care to remember. Started as a fruit and Potato merchant. Then road transport to the middle east. Then stick on plastic thingies for furniture. Now a bit of Property, a little bit of plastic,. Mending toilets. In between a little sheep farming. and 300 hens once and some dogs. All gone but still got Dirty Harry and the boat so nothing changes.
No one can force me to come here-----------

I hope this dirty deed wasn't dumped on you in your lunch hour, now that would be a bummer. Look on the bright side, a whole summer to mill about indulging in your favourite past time with the company and support of other, superbly handsome, like minded boaty people. (as myself). Plenty of time to consider options and opertunities that lay beyond the doors that will open before you in the future. (Barf)
Its all coming back to me, those terrible man management seminars and training videos. I was made redundant twelve years ago and look where I am today! Can anyone lend me fifty pee for the lecky meter?
Sorry to hear of your plight, its disheartening at first, but it gets better, honest.
Hard luck. If it's any consolation I've never to spoken to anyone who hasn't said they've found a better job than the one they were made redundant from.
That is a blow, however I would agree with all the other posts that it's not the end of the world - with your experience you'll soon pick up another (better) job, or indeed could use the time and capital you now have to go out on your own. At least then you can't be laid off again, unless like Haydn you make yourself redundant. Mind you, considering his mis-spelled post-pub rants it was probably a misunderstanding blown out of all proportion in an alcohol-fuelled haze (much like Roy Keane's barney with Mick McCarthy in Ireland's world cup squad)
Just goes to prove what you have prob always suspected life has got it in for you.
Once being employed gave you job security and being self employed was the thin ice daring chancy thing to do.
Now it is not so with people being summoned to office at moments notice etc.The thing with working for yourself is you will know when things are going wrong a long time in advance and the best bit of all about being your own boss is if you do not want to do something you can tell them (nicely)to ##### ##f
Oh Gawd I have just bought a new house and boat and work is a bit quiet .worry.worry worry.
Lets face it life is poo whatever you do.So get the credit card out and fill the boat up with fuel before the buggers cancell it.IMHO
Being made redundant isn't the biggest problem. I could never find anyone to employ me in the first place!
Once tried to make myself redundant and put myself on the dole. But they said that my boss had to sign the form. I said. Will the wife do. But they said no! Never got any money out of them. So had to just bum along on my own. Must have had the most varied career in history. No sooner get started in something. Then it goes out of fashion. Some thing else always turns up though. Just have to be a bit flexible. Anyway just goes to show. Just found a picture of one of my dads trucks from 1940-50 ish. Company is still going even if I have changed it's direction five or ten times.

Really sorry to hear that, Adrian. Look on the bright side. You gonna have time on your hands just as the boating season begins in earnest. Chill out for a few weeks on the boat and plan the future
Thats a bummer. Did they follow the proper procedures with regards to the 4 week consaltation period etc... If not do the buggers for all you can get, or were they preety goo with the "handshake".
Does this mean that we wont see you down at Redcliffe. If you want a tow give me a call.
Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!
You were a bit late posting this then, thought you would have one it by 2.oopm at least, suppose it took a while to empty the desk of all those boating mags etc, ah well as said by others one door closes and another opens and usually for the better, I know it happened to me 12 years ago so I set up my own and have never looked back since, so good luck to you and keep up the boating.
Sorry to hear the news but I can honestly say that being made redundant was the best thing that ever happened to me. I got made redundant on the 17 Dec 96, got a big severance package and started work in a new job on 3rd Jan 97 as EvilKontractorSkum. The best bit was that I got a contract for the old company about a year later! I wouldn't have ever been able to afford a boat as a permy.
Don't let it get you down.
