    Difference between coordinates

If you can find an oldish chart of the relevant region of Portugal using the ED50 datum there may be a note with the adjustment from ED50 to WGS84. On my south Brittany charts the adjustment from ED50 to WGS84 datum is -.06minutes N and +.09minutes W. Depending where you are in Portugal, you...

What items would you carry in your toolbox in addition to normal tools?

I also carry a long "grabber" that has three prongs which open with a button on one end and close with a spring - to get things which have dropped down behind. A postcard - sized piece of plywood for cutting ropes on. A straightened coat hanger with one end bent into a hook for fishing things...

    Issues with a garmin gps182

Hi Steve, I had a Garmin 152 GPS which is an earlier model than yours. It locates about 10 satellites and homes in on them in just a couple of minutes. I would suspect either the BNC connector that you are having problems with, or the mushroom antenna itself. I have a spare brand new Garmin...

Lines led to cockpit. What's the downside?

Our Jeanneau Sunlight 30 has all lines led back to the cockpit, with two winches on the coachroof and a row of clutches either side. We have no problems using these controls, but sometimes need to go on the coachroof to flake down the mainsail, depending on how it drops.

    Simrad TP10 tillerpilot mystery fault

When I had that problem with my TP10, I put it down to the battery voltage slowly falling during operation. When it reached a critical level the same fault occurred. Trying it again later when the battery had recovered a little, it would work OK again for a while. Next time the problem occurs...

    What happened to Geoffrey Williams?

I worked with GW and a small team at his premises mentioned above in the early 2000s on the design of two wind turbines and a large generator. He had earlier specialised in identifying ideal sites for wind turbines and had then studied electrical engineering and began designing and constructing...

Navigating the upper reaches of the Fowey River

We overwinter at St Winnow boat yard, so we take our 1.5m fin keeled boat up and down at the start and end of each season. We can follow the channel (unmarked) up as far as St Winnow for 1 1/2 hours either side of HW a few days either side of springs. As jdc says, Google Earth shows the channel.

    Echopilot Depth & Speed log

Actually I do still have the Echopilot Bronze Trio and it is an excellent piece of kit and I can't think why they discontinued it. I do have the manual (on board though), but better still, I downloaded the .pdf file of the manual for the whole Echopilot Bronze Plus range some years ago from...

    To the scillies !?

Do aim to round the Lizard as the tide is turning in your favour. You will need a tender as there is no pontoon where you can moor on the Scillies and a short stay alongside in Hughtown is allowed for water and diesel.

    Electric winch handle

We have a 30ft Jeanneau. Our Winchrite raises the mainsail all the way up very easily and it raises the anchor very quickly with our Simpson-Lawrence Anchorman. I haven't tried it on the genoa sheets or the mainsheet. You either need a self-tailing winch or someone to tail the halyard/sheet...
