So this a new to me (used) instrument and Ive installed it, with the mushroom and coaxial cable that came with it. That cable had no connector plug, so I bought some bnc1 connectors and a coaxial crimping tool, but bloody hell its not easy is it? I got a pack of 5 and went through all 5 before getting anywhere near one connected. The tiny ferrule doesnt seem to crimp securely, my last attempt seemed better but then Im not sure there was sufficient braid over the cable end ferrule.
I plugged it in and powered up, how long would it take to aquire satellites on a new install? The csreen has some lines on the rhs and I'm not sure its actually getting the position. Is a dodgy bnc connector thr most likely reason or are there other problems that could cause this?

Hi Steve,

I had a Garmin 152 GPS which is an earlier model than yours. It locates about 10 satellites and homes in on them in just a couple of minutes. I would suspect either the BNC connector that you are having problems with, or the mushroom antenna itself.
I have a spare brand new Garmin antenna complete with its coax cable and original BNC connector which you can have if you like. I won't need it any more as the boat has been sold and we don't intend to replace it.
Send me a PM with your address and I will post it to you.

(y)Top man

Just one point, these old GPS can sometimes take up to 20 mins to get a fix if they have been off for a long time or have moved a distance from where they were last used, so Steve might need to wait a bit longer than your 2 mins for the first time.

Thats a very generous offer, thank you. And yes, I used to have a 152, this is its replacement after that died.

Just to update this, I installed the mushroom that egythene kindly sent me ( thank you) and the gps picked up the satellites and gave me my position, so very pleased with that.
The creen is still like in the photo, so thats obviously an issue with the unit. I can live with that as I can still read my lat/long figures.

One quick thought, did you change the length of the cable when you were crimping the BNCs? It may be part of the RF tuned circuit and set to a specific length.

Worth mentioning, there was a GPS date rollover a couple of weeks ago, so some older units may be affected and give poor results and incorrect dates.

I have a furuno WS-200 1400 pound paperweight on my desk right now.

No idea if these Garmin are affected but its something to note!

Worth a mention that a lot of the older Garmins have a battery soldered to the board which may need replacing. Instructions for replacing a Garmin GPSMap 235 battery (PICS)
as do a lot of older gps units. symptoms are the unit takes a long time to get a fix while it downloads the almanac, then loses it when powered off.

Love my Garmin 128. Heading out on my failed trip to the Azores my Trusty 128 just turned off, then again, and never picked another satellite up. bad timeing or just a good excuse. Must hunt down another antenna.
