Just measured our old speedboat/trailer rig of similar size to the OPs. Tow hitch to prow retainer thingy is about 1 metre, and prow to axle is 2.7 metres. Transom of the boat overhangs axle by about 1 metre. Our engine is an old 25hp Johnson 2 stroke, so probably lighter than the Yamaha...

Probably doesn't make much difference, but I've always layered from smallest to biggest on the theory that if a layer doesn't "take" for any reason, it'll be held by the next up, thus less chance of the completed patch delaminating in one chunk, and it only has one "edge"! Probably nonsense...

+1 for the 50/50 acetone/atf mix + rattle-gun. Only today undertook the easiest removal of exhaust nuts I've ever known. Seems very popular method at the moment.

Yeah, but they wrote that before the nanny state! Actually loads of us oldies went to sea in very similar boats, I suspect, and most of us are still around. :) Of course, we always picked the most ideal weather conditions, and usually "cruised" in company, There were the odd accidents, yes...

Sounds like a good idea. Never tried it (other than with paint), but as varnish is litttle more than paint without the pigment, I see no reason why it shouldn't work well. I usually thin varnish and paint a little anyway to attain a smoother finish, so see no problem there. Too much thinning...

Ahhh, you didn't mention a professional check was recommended by the surveyer. And it was he who suggested it, not the insurers. I misunderstood.

Loathe to post this on the thread, and somebody has probably already mentioned this and I've missed it, but I did wonder. As there are two blakes close together in the photos, is the PO actually operating on the same one - inside and outside of the boat? Wouldn't be the first time....

What's to lose by trying it? The make I used a couple years ago did seem to have quite an extended shelf life, as it worked well at about 3 years old! If yours doesn't set or something, just scrap it off and buy new....

Where do you people get your insurance cover? Our boat is insured for Uk waters, the Atlantic coast waters of France, Spain and Portugal and the whole western Mediterranean Sea, all fully comprehensive and with no mention at all of "rigging inspections". At a loss understanding why other people...
