I wonder if the complainers realise that posting on this thread actually boosts the revenue for the channels they are whinging about?

YouTube pays creators for content based on the number of views the content gets. Every time this thread pops to the top of the forum it will:

1. likely find new people from within the forum to watch it = another 1p to the intrepid drama queens.

2. enhance its importance in the google search rankings, meaning it’s more likely to be be found by someone searching - resulting in1.

3. The youtube algorithm (which no one really understands) prioritises content with more engagement, content that brings people from outside youtube to inside it is almost certainly going to be highly rewarded. High priority content gets shown to people after they watched a video they selected.

The more you moan - the more money they make! They have been playing the YouTube game long enough to analyse what makes them most money - bikinis, manufactured drama, click bait titles, even apparent incompetence. They’ll make more of the stuff that makes more money.

It's a fair point but for me (see post 1), I don't begrudge an income to anyone that makes free to view video. As long as the buggers don't expect me to directly contribute, obviously. However I do reserve the right to make comment on a sailing forum designed for comment on sailing matters.
Not that my own posts have been particularly destructive. However the forum titans always find it easier to attack things that have not been said

I think I have identified a trend, maybe: All Purpose Pat Answer Syndrome? People with nowt to say don't like to say nothing so they fall back on a learned response. Linguistic repetition in children is called echolalia and it its mutated form is favoured by people on the spectrum,....................... that's all I'm saying.
However. Examples of APPAS:

Any general but basic question will be met by some twerp saying: "If you have to ask that question you should not be sailing at all"

Ask a technical question the learned response is: "Have you ever thought of contacting the manufacturer"

Ask how to climb your mast, just wait for: "Your insurance may well be invalid"

No good coming here and employing tricky-dicky things like logical arguments. The basic tenant of APPAS is that everything should be turned against the original poster so, whatever is at issue, becomes their fault:

You don't understand
You are jealous
You are too old/young
You don't know that things have always been like this
You have made a spelling or grammar error
You have no experience
You are jealous

Then, when all is lost , the barrel is scraped: "You don't have to watch or buy or participate" ☺

doug,

I was with you right up to the final sentence... I don't think it does any harm to remind people that the things they are getting grumpy about are things they've chosen to watch / read / etc. Sometimes we forget that there is no compulsion to participate so if you are getting annoyed by something either you like being annoyed... ...or you are probably not that annoyed and just a troll?

Cover blown. You are quite correct the final sentence is a bit florid. I will temper it.

Thread drift ...a bit . If anyone wants to see a "raw" boaty YT channel take a look at "The Water Camper " ...... no T&A or Bikinis or music here just a elderly guy and his wife with no plans nor critical path slowly in a laid back manner restoring a ,as they say in the good ol US ofA , a " fixer upper " ........ cant help liking the guy though .

these guys were delivery drivers ..... went round the UK - built their channel up and now sail full time - via Youtube and Patreon

No bikinis.

When the guy does a piece to camera as they arrive in the Caribbean - about what it means to them, how their life has changed,
how they never thought they were going to achieve much, see the world etc etc... I found it inspiring and moving .

Anyway this year I was pleased to master marina berthing for the first time ;-)

Big plus one for those guys.

A bit tempted to buy them a book on how to prepare and eat fruit and vegetables though!!!

I wish the youtubers would just get on with it and do it like the rest of us do/did rather than try to make a drama out of the routine. It seems to me to be trying to grasp a little attention and money. I could not watch it, but have watched lots of internet funded sailors, most of whom are still alive by the grace of god. I tend to be able to tolerate them a short while before moving on to something else. Very rarely have I watched a second video from the same people.

I think the Old seadog was one of the first I followed .... he has only just escaped NZ cos of Covid lockdown ...

From Birmingham on a 28 ft boat I like the unprententious Chasing Currents .. just down by Siciliy now.

a year ago they had never been outside the Solent

The starting out episodes are my favourites ..

Now there is also a sub-set of Yotty Youtube couple break ups which can be upsetting (or not) - but are proably insight to the downside of the lifestyle .
The breakup episode on the channel is alaways a big drama and of course it is the creators choice to share their pain .... and the viewers choice to watch it .

In these three examples it is the female partner who has left -

Wildings Sailing
Bums on a Boat
Sailing Zingaro

James from Zingaro seems to have recovered ok

I'll add " huub vlogs" to that list. A likeable chap sailing on a shoe string on a clapped out small yacht but living the dream now having apparently got over his partner jumping ship .

The same thing happens with all people, it's not specific to YouTube
But the trend isn’t that people split up - it’s that they split up and the “men” continue sailing (and I assume YouTubing from what was said) and the “women” stop sailing and quit YouTubing too. Now it may just be coincidence… but that to me is an interesting trend with four couples all seemingly having followed the same outcome (out of 16 possible outcomes after a breakup?).
