YouTube, again.

doug,

I was with you right up to the final sentence... I don't think it does any harm to remind people that the things they are getting grumpy about are things they've chosen to watch / read / etc. Sometimes we forget that there is no compulsion to participate so if you are getting annoyed by something either you like being annoyed... ...or you are probably not that annoyed and just a troll?

Cover blown. You are quite correct the final sentence is a bit florid. I will temper it.

.

Thread drift ...a bit . If anyone wants to see a "raw" boaty YT channel take a look at "The Water Camper " ...... no T&A or Bikinis or music here just a elderly guy and his wife with no plans nor critical path slowly in a laid back manner restoring a ,as they say in the good ol US ofA , a " fixer upper " ........ cant help liking the guy though .

https://www.youtube.com/c/TheSailingBrothers/videos

these guys were delivery drivers ..... went round the UK - built their channel up and now sail full time - via Youtube and Patreon

No bikinis.

When the guy does a piece to camera as they arrive in the Caribbean - about what it means to them, how their life has changed,
how they never thought they were going to achieve much, see the world etc etc... I found it inspiring and moving .

Anyway this year I was pleased to master marina berthing for the first time ;-)

Big plus one for those guys.

A bit tempted to buy them a book on how to prepare and eat fruit and vegetables though!!!

I wish the youtubers would just get on with it and do it like the rest of us do/did rather than try to make a drama out of the routine. It seems to me to be trying to grasp a little attention and money. I could not watch it, but have watched lots of internet funded sailors, most of whom are still alive by the grace of god. I tend to be able to tolerate them a short while before moving on to something else. Very rarely have I watched a second video from the same people.

I think the Old seadog was one of the first I followed .... he has only just escaped NZ cos of Covid lockdown ...

From Birmingham on a 28 ft boat I like the unprententious Chasing Currents .. just down by Siciliy now.

a year ago they had never been outside the Solent

The starting out episodes are my favourites ..

Now there is also a sub-set of Yotty Youtube couple break ups which can be upsetting (or not) - but are proably insight to the downside of the lifestyle .
The breakup episode on the channel is alaways a big drama and of course it is the creators choice to share their pain .... and the viewers choice to watch it .

In these three examples it is the female partner who has left -

Wildings Sailing
Bums on a Boat
Sailing Zingaro

James from Zingaro seems to have recovered ok

I'll add " huub vlogs" to that list. A likeable chap sailing on a shoe string on a clapped out small yacht but living the dream now having apparently got over his partner jumping ship .

The same thing happens with all people, it's not specific to YouTube
But the trend isn’t that people split up - it’s that they split up and the “men” continue sailing (and I assume YouTubing from what was said) and the “women” stop sailing and quit YouTubing too. Now it may just be coincidence… but that to me is an interesting trend with four couples all seemingly having followed the same outcome (out of 16 possible outcomes after a breakup?).

Getting back to the original OP .......... This week we are the biggest boat in the Spanish little marina Woo Hoo .!!. Next weeks little teaser is that she has a cry . .... theres a surprise ..

I hate to say it but that mirrors the wider community pretty well. Perhaps not the YT thing but as a general rule the man would keep the boat in a given split. I'm certain there are exceptions, there was a lady from Gosport on my VHF course who kept her Halberg Rassey and learned to sail (maybe out of spite...).
