My casual observation is the prices for uk boats are holding well. Euro is stronger so non uk boats appear dearer to us. Sailors cannot sail in groups so they are buying a boat for themselves. If you unexpectedly have a lot of time on your hands and a low budget there are still inexpensive ways to get on the water and sail. Skipper training and similar has its Covid risks. Interest rates are rock bottom so one could think may as well spend it. Some people may be retiring earlier than expected, are in good health and may have a tax free lump sum element from a pension pot in the bank. Sailing on your own little cruiser is perfect Covid Isolation. It can be a nice family thing too. The uk weather has been good lately. Sailing is really good fun, can be good excercise and you can make it as challenging as you want. I am not in the trade but it would not surprise me if RIBs and little powered boats are selling well.

To my surprise, the yacht prices are holding well. Perhaps people are borrowing to buy yachts because of the very low interest rates. I can not see the collapse of the market despite the current political and economic unpredictability. Yachts are plentiful and affordable and people are buying them.

I suspect the price for wooden boats will continue to be rock bottom. However, I am reliably informed that the main dealer stock of AWB’s is pretty much sold out.

I’ve been contacted by email from several brokerages that I have used in the past, all of them offering to sell my boat as they urgently need boats to sell so it would appear that the market is very buoyant ( pardon the pun ?)

With new boats being priced mainly in euros and the pound dropping, new boat prices will be increasing and that's without any effect Brexit may also have with possible import tariffs so, maybe older boats will hold their prices better than expected. OTOH, unemployment may rocket as a by-product of Corona so maybe not as many people able to afford new (or any) boats.

Massive lockdown bounce at present with boats that would normally take 6 months to sell, selling within weeks at asking prices.Even if predictions are only half as bad as to economic fallout come the Autumn with the ending of the furlough scheme etc ,there is sadly going to be a massive spike in unemployment and businesses folding. Those effected will find it very hard to justify hanging on to luxury items such as yachts. The bounce also applies to the housing market which is v likely to reverse come the winter.

At the moment UK brokerage boats are very attractive to continental buyers because of the weak pound. These buyers will quite likely dry up after 1st Jan, when UK boats will incur VAT if exported to the EU, making them around 20% more expensive than at the moment.

There are more boats being bought here in Jersey than previous years, both new and second hand

A friend is abroker and he’s having a very busy time ...mostly smaller boats but he has a couple of £200k boats with several prospective buyers circling each one

As noted previously € buyers seeing good value in £ priced boats

I'm currently looking for a yacht around the 30' mark, and anything in good condition seems to be selling within a few days of being advertised.

Also, a friend who is a harbourmaster reported a big increase in mooring sales immediately after lockdown ended.

Brokers seem to have very little on their books.

Seeing the explosion in paddleboarding on the Hamble, I do wonder if any of that would eventually feed into future boat sales down the years

Anecdotally I've heard that good boats are selling very quickly. My own theory is that people are maybe planning to spend more holiday time in the UK rather than flying to holiday destinations and sailing may seem attractive in that light. I wouldn't mind betting caravans and motorhomes see a similar buoyant market.

Well this thread has cheered me up.
I really need to finish off a few little jobs and get my old boat advertised.
What's the market like for a MAB on a mooring in the North of Scotland??
