On the TV news last night, one item was the World Cup…well to tell the truth it’s been on for what seems a long time. However the point to make is that interviews were held at random in UK and around the world on “who are you hoping would win, England or Brazil.
In OZ, not many follow the game so most of us would hope England won, however SHOCK SHOCK in Scotland, the majority wanted anyone BUT England to win.
Some were adamant that they wouldn’t barrack for England if they were the only team playing. Am I missing something or has WW 3 started between England and Scotland?

They were just bitter cos they were too useless to even get there.

I am gutted but proud that we got this far. A few beers tonight will help me feel better I hope.

The last thing we English want is the Jocks supporting us, we would have to listen (non-stop as usual) to all their analysis of the game etc. Let's keep em well at bay, could start by rebuilding Hadrian's Wall.

We have enough support around the world without all the tradional England haters trying to free load on our great team.

Shame not to be going through but they have given us some great entertainment during the whole world cup process, well done lads.

Hi,

Speaking as a Scot - I think that the interviews were probably "randomly" conducted to make a good news story. None of the scots I've spoken to wanted England to lose and I certainly didn't.

I'm not a football fan but it would be churlish indeed not to wish England well and I am saddened that they are out of the cup. Now, if only I could learn to understand cricket.....

Regards

Fred

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

England only got to the World Cup 'cos they hosted in 19** (I'm not going to be the one that mentions that date) and as winners in 1970. And can you remeber the Engerland - Scotland score in 1967? World champions ripped apart by a team of no-hopers. Bitter? Not us we've enjoyed the World Cup. Pubs packed supporting our cousins - Better luck next time Ireland.....

In all the bars in all the world there is a Scotsman telling anyone in earshot what a wonderful place Scotland is.

If they are so good at football, and everthing else that they have done was either bigger, better or before anyone else, and especially now that we given them back their parliament and Stone of Scoon, why don't the buggers all go back there?

I'm an Englishman who has also experienced living and working in Scotland. I found the vast majority of Scots to be have a mature, considered opinion and didn't always revert to supporting "whoever England is playing"!

However, it's true that you will encounter a significant undercurrent who do still bear a grudge over previous English mis-demeanours and, quite frankly, don't seem to have grown up. Sure, we suppressed and mistreated the Scots at various times in history, but it was a looooong time ago. And things have changed.....

Now that the Scots have redressed the balance and have everything they could hope for, you might expect them to bury the hatchett - after all, they populate half the British cabinet, dominate the FTSE100 boardrooms, got Devolution and their own parliament and enjoy huge subsidies from the English! But as I found, whilst most Scots don't seem to carry an England complex, you will still encounter a fair number who do and will make it known!

After all, if the English adopted a similalry unforgiving approach and worried about things that happened in 'recent history', surely we would boycott all forms of pizza and pasta because they come from the country responsible for the brutal Roman invasion of our islands!

Lets not stop at the Romans. We can also hate The Saxons - Germany, The Danes - Danmark, The Vikings - Norway, The Normans - France. And the Scots they did invaded England, the Jacobite rebellion, they got right down the country (Derby). It was then the English gave them stick back in Scotland. So they brought it on themselves.

All the first 4 sailed across, so these the sailing link! OK!

The only Scots/Irish/Aussies that whine about the UK are the ones that live here... But do they ever go home ... no.

The ones that stay home are just fine and enjoy and build on their own great culture.

I dare say its the same with ex pat brits.. sit around in someone else's country saying how good it is back home.

I like the living in the UK, I love the South, and The Solent is the best sailing around (on a weekday)

Unfortunatley I think we were just outclassed this morning. So Im packing up me gear and the kids and going to watch the RTI...

Re: Pizza

....... accordingly to the American Board of Tourism no doubt!

Anyway, not so, invented by an Italian chef looking for something to do with some leftover dough.... spread some tomato on it chucked it into an oven for a few mins to see what happened..... the rest is history!

Pleased to know that there are some fair minded scotsmen. I shall start supporting their team again as well as drinking their whisky.

Re: Pizza

I read a leaflet in the States to the effect that it was invented in Naples in 1800 and something to commemorate some event, with the colours of the pizza supposedly representing the Italian flag.

Also a Scot .. agree completely .. I shouted for England! Abhor completely like all fair minded Scots the unacceptable face of nationalism. However over the years like any other nation we've had our fair share of vociferous bigots.
