Have a look at this potential purchase, would that bottom worry you? Supposedly 7 year old replacement Volvo but listed as a MD2040 which is a much older engine isn’t it?

Might need a service of the injectors - injectors are a service item every so many hours; I think the 2030 needed them serviced every 200 hours. Not an expensive service. Ask the vendor for details of engine servicing.

No it would not bother me. Spot stains happen. Of course that doesn’t mean the engine shouldn’t be checked. I wash the underside of my stern quarter about twice a year to remove soot.

I have see this on a few boats.

I reckon that any diesel without a DPF is going to produce a bit of soot - that's what the DPF in cars is supposed to stop. It wouldn't worry me too much if the engine's otherwise healthy. My last boat was way overpowered - 28HP VP2003 in a Snapdragon 24. Because the engine wasn't working hard enough, it would clag up and start to smoke. A few minutes flat out laid a smoke screen like a destroyer on the Murmansk run, but it soon cleared, and we were good to go for another few months.

As a bit of a diversion - what cleaning product do you find best removes the soot? I have to give my stern a wash a couple of times a year and it always seems surprisingly stubborn!

Original ... before EU ruined it ... Cilit Bang Lime and Rust Toilet cleaner ... latest is rubbish ... but OK for less serious stuff.

For serious ... I use Oven Cleaner Foaming ... but left too long can dull GRP surface.

Could be over propped. Or even fouled prop. Re. engine - you could always get the numbers off it and ask Volvo. Adverts don't always contain the correct information.

You could always stick Cling Film in the area around the stern, that way instead of cleaning it you just peel the old Cling Film off and apply new.
(Years ago when I used to deal in ex-police cars on the ones I would get in from Liverpool they had put Cling Film on the inside of the door windows to stop the glass shattering if some yobbo threw a rock at the window).

Yes, the 2040 went out of production in 2004. As suggested the soot deposits could mean the injectors need checking but could also be causd by deposits built up particularly in the exhaust elbow from either too much light load running or because it is over propped. When engines are replaced some people use the old propeller or do not fit the correct size. That engine should run up to 3300-3600 rpm and cruise at 2400rpm. More info on the boat might help understand whether the engine is appropriate for the boat

I clean with a detergent such as gelcoat cleaner and then use Starbrite Color (sic) Restorer Polish before the usual wax.
