No, Bangleised BMW's are not 'works of genius'. They are ugly. Period.
[/ QUOTE ]
I fully agree.
In fact, series 7 is the best expression of his design concepts, according to himself.
And they are the ugliest.
For the 5 series, he was forced to smooth his ideas, and that's why they're still ugly, but not as much as the 7s.
I would still not buy a "new shape" BMW - the older shape 5 series in "sport" guise is one of the best looking saloons out, the new shape is as you say butt ugly.
IMHO, the last 5 series (E39 in BMWspeak) was the best ever car BMW made. I had 3 of them and the first, a 528i, was just a fantastic combination of performance, handling, space and looks. The latest 5 series is a step backwards
I have a 7 series myself and everyday I look at it and wonder how the board of directors at BMW ever signed off the design for production and that goes for the interior as well as the exterior. It's sort of so ugly, it's cool
However, like most Beemers, it drives brilliantly and mine has been faultless unlike my previous Merc
Tee hee, this is all "imho" stuff for sure. I had an e39 (M5) for 4 years and now an e60 for 2, and the e60 is streets ahead imho. I think the e60 is an utterly brilliant piece of styling, on the inside too (sexy minimalist dash). Despite what the thicko journo critics who borrow the car for a day say, i-drive is brilliant when you tune your mind to it. The gimmicks like head-up display and seat sides that motorised-push you into a corner are entertainingly clever bits of engineering. As you say it is wonderful driver's car - fantastic chassis, engine and brakes. Nice noise from the V10 too. So yeah, i think Bangle is a bit of a genius, and he'd be more of a genius if he put a bigger fuel tank in the damned thing
Nah, the I Drive is a nonsense, a triumph of technology over practicality. I don't know what it's like on the 5 series but on a 7 you have to go into the I drive menu to alter the flow from the air vents or change the radio station which is total stupidity as well as being dangerous as it requires that you take your eyes off the road for an operation that should be intuitive
Agreed the E60 M5 is a good looking car but the poverty spec versions of the E60 can look awful especially with skinny wheels and a dark colour
I've had two of the new 7 series, and whilst it isn't the most attractive car, to my eyes it is not ugly... it has a presence, which is what large limo's should have.
Note also that it was at least a new design direction and MB have copied the 7 for the new S (boot line, i-drive, dash etc).
Well I suppose this end of the post highlights the differences in peoples idea of what constitutes great design, if I may just revert to the 52, we have had probably more mixed comments on this new model than any of the others, some just love it and think its the business and others much as yourself but there seems little in the middle you either love it with a passion or not, it may not be Bangle changing design but what it does offer that nothing else has come close to as yet is is an incredible use of space on a big mobo that sacrifices nothing in performace for nearly half the running cost of an equivilant and brings glamourous moboing within the realms of production boat prices yet still a very premium build.
Dont forget of course this is number one and isn't even finished yet and will be hammered into the ground before production starts so expect to see quite a few changes before that as was the 56.
Ok sales pitch over, I am still one very proud dad and again if anyone wants to come out for a play next Feb / March before she starts her travels around the south coast please just PM me or knock on the side if you see us, all are welcome and I promise no sales pitch just come and have some fun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
Actually LJS I dunno where that girl lives. Thing is, hanging out on the high OB-factor Sq58 floating caravan I'm inundated with totty. Got loads of totty-on-board pics I could post for you, but they're not on this 'puter (I'm at work) and I'm about to scarper off to Milan then Antibes, so maybe I'll post em Monday if that's ok?
You out and about next week from Antibes then? shall be on the look out torpedos at the ready /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif will be having a few days on mine before she goes to Palma to new owner /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Am in Antibes this Friday/Saturday only but boat is in Bonifacio so I'll be cruising around in my new car rahter than on the boat, pictured below on the quay in antibes.
Back in London working early next week, fly to Bonifacio Weds and sail boat back to Antibes (waves permitting). So might be in Antibes Friday or Saturday next week I guess...
If you want an Antibes berth ours is free (405). At least I think it is - forumite Houghn was on it in his new prin67 but afaik he has got a long berth lease starting 1 July so he has moved off ours. Anyway, if it's free just help yourself and ask forgiveness not permission if capitainnerie winges. Will look out for you - we are callsign braveheart. TCM is around too - there for 2 weeks starting this w/e I think. When do you head back to IoM?
By the way, there are loads of Abs in Beaulieu these days. Must be a busy dealer based there?
Now let me guess which one it is then? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I shall keep an eye out for you and if we are pottling around Antibes we will shall hot foot it onto your berth /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif many thanks indeed, would reciprocate but ours is only 14m in LaNap.
I am down next Wednesday but we go to Paris on Saturday as SWMBO's horse is in the Bastille day parade on the Champs-Élysées as ceremonial guard to Sarkozy so no escaping that I am afraid /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Yep Guy is going great guns down there but a good few came through us via IOM scheme.
Nice to see these 'secret' pictures. Nice looking boat and I'm sure that when the protective layers are removed the large picture windows will blend as with other 'Abs' models.
I also think they are an important feature, internally they will allow plenty of light in and a good view out, which can be a negative on typical sports boats. They really impressed me when I looked at them last Sibs.
The hips are in keeping with current trends and although some might think unnecessary they don't spoil the lines at all (personal) I also liked the Sessa.
My initial impression was crossed Targa 52 with Atlantis/Gobbi but from the rear qtr. the square transom and patio doors reminds me of the big Windy. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
A great thread, ruined by stupid personal views about crap Krout cars though! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Please guys, got to a 'motorcar' forum or the lounge! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Marketing boats has bugger all to do with cars, why does every self appointed expert draw parallels?
Yes I know, thread drift! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] I think you're wrong there. Marketing a boat of that nature, as has been demonstrated in this thread does relate to automotive design as the prospective punters are owners of those very cars that rely on design and form more than (or at least as much as) function.
It's a long time since cars ceased to be function only and boats have caught up. So I think a discussion on the form, and drawing parallels, is perfectly valid.
I take it I am numbered amongst the self-appointed experts.
Do we have to wait for a qualified marketeer or designer comes along to hear the gospel-according-to? I thought the forums were for debate?
What makes you think I don't have any relevant marketing or design skills. Didn't always run a B&B you know.

[/ QUOTE ]I read somewhere that they deliberately introduced those design ideas on the 7 first because, being aware of the risks, they couldn't afford a potential flop on bigger production number cars (5 and 3).
idrive concept is fine - but the merc execution of it(COMAND) is better - espcially with regards to navigation.
Frinstance, with map displayed, if you move the cursor around, the beemer does nothing about it. But merc say oh- dya wanna go there then? and a click says yes. This means you can just go "northish" with merc, not so easy with idrive.
Also, with idrive, once you have plugged in a destination - it is not easy to examine the route or zoom into distant bits of the route and check if it'sa bit gps-like daft. The only (bodgy) way to do this is to pretend you are going somewhere else and abort the process.
Bemmer nav computing also bit slow and weak, much slower and with weirder routes than merc. And it seems to hold it in memory badly too - so stop car for fuel (again) and it will ask if you are still going the same place? yes i am you dolt, the clock doesn't ask if i still want it to keep time, so keep pointing that way till we get there or i say otherwise. Beemer doesn't even cancel the destination once you are there.
Also beemer map is still quite low res on maximum zoom, not easy in cities.
And beemer zooming in isn't natural - clockwise like a screwdriver is natural to zoom "in" but beemer is anticlockwise to go in.
Finally on beemer there is too much "confirming" things imho, a bit too much Cobol programming... so hopefully a future version of idrive will improve the software, cos it needs to.
