I have a wooden mast currently with worn varnish. I would prefer a painted finish, does anybody have any experience of which paints to use and what preperation is needed. Thanks for all replies.

coelans make a varnish system which is ideal for masts and lasts, bit expensive though. But it can also be used as paint with a pigment added, the boonus being its flexible.

I use Ronseal 5 year woodstain from B&Q on the masts of my 65 year old ketch. It gives a great satin finish with only three coats, is VERY tolerant of application with cheap brushes, looks great and does exactly what is says on the tin! I have a mate who did his wheelhouse over 3 years ago, and it ain't cracked yet. It also purports to be "breathing" to allow moisture out. For £11 or so a 750ml tin it's a real deal. One tin gave me three coats on 44 feet of handrails, a 3o foot mast a 15 foot mast and their associated booms.
