Low temperature sailing is something I've happily dodged for some time. But Neptune has chosen to send a wet and cold spell to Southern Spain over the next few days, just after I get there. So taking foulies and thick socks, hat, yadda yadda is the theme of the day.
No delivery is ever smooth. I've got an 0700 flight tomorrow to get to Malaga via Barcelona. Had to change flight from Thursday due to an airline groundsman strike. Which they now have put back a day. Typical. But never mind, the yacht, a Lagoon 380 is in Estepona, a place I know and like. Plus the couple who own the boat are friends and looking forward to seeing them. Other crew, my cousin, joins us Thursday from UK so unaffected by any strike action.
Over the last few weeks, we have been chatting on boat preparations and they've done a lot of work. Engines serviced, sails to sailmaker for some tidying, new standing rigging, some new running rigging, autopilot repaired and checked, new fridge, yadda yadda. Wonder what will break on the way to Lanzarote??
Plan to leave Friday morning after a forecast rain front goes through overnight. Brisk Westerlies down to Gib, but means we can give the yacht and us a good shakedown. Once we confirm everything works, some reefing practice, couple of tacks and gybe, man overboard exercise, etc. That should warm us up. Gonna refuel in Gib where its cheap and anchor overnight in La Linea. That's looking very cold. Yuk. However as the Westerlies are forecast to drop during the day, we can make a dawn start and show them the fab sights of the Straits in daylight. Once round Cabo Spartel, so far its looking like getting a bit warmer and mostly downhill. However, plenty of time for the weather to change her mind yet!!
Whatever, we are looking forward to what can be a very pleasant ride once out of the Straits.
