I took the picture from here,

http://www.barcolana.it/foto.php

a yearly race near Trieste, the list of participants is 27 pages long, each page with >60 lines, that gives around 1700 entrants... people often keep their fenders on, and share salami and red wine glasses with the other boats nearby

been through the canal du midi with several Italian crews of hire boats so I can understand the need to keep fenders out.

We had our fenders out at Bembridge ledge in this year's Round The Island Race - but wouldn't have dreamt of sharing our fruit cake with any other competitors!

And it was all going so well until the watchkeeper in the blue ship decided that it was commonsense to keep out of the way of the bigger vessel, and altered course to port to go under Renate Schultz's stern!
How was he to know that Renate Schultz was going to alter course to starboard to avoid a vessel that was crossing from her starboard side?
