My parents are buying in Turkey and have a short list of GibSea 364, Beneteau Oceanis 351 and Jeanneau 362. All ex charter.Their budget leads to French boats. Any views on which is best and why? They are not that experienced. It will all be med sailing

In mass produced boats like this, you are not going to get duffs. I would suggest that they choose the one which feels right for them if possible - after having a test sail for a few days in each if possible- and then get it surveyed.

Hi There,

I bought a Jeanneau, in Bodrum. I'm very pleased with it. It wasn't ex charter, but I did have a very good survey carried out. I can give you the name of the surveyor of you like.
Don't forget about the VAT issue if buying in Turkey - I learnt that mistake the hard way!

Could the yacht not be kept in Turkey untill they are in the EU, when surely it would become VAT exempt?

It would depend on registration but I'm sure corrections will be forthcoming /forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

Just a thought.

Don't hold your breath though...they're not even discussing potential dates for Turkey's accession until the end of next year I thought....

According to any almanacs you read, when the boat is in EU waters you could be asked to produce proof that VAT is paid at any time.

I've come from Turkey to Mallorca, stopping off almost everywhere in between, and got asked for insurance once, and for ICC once, but that's it.

I've looked into it, and the only way I could find round the VAT issue is to buy in the EU, it'll already have been paid then. Unless of course anyone know different?
