Which engine oil

Not sure thicker oil is a solution to engine age or wear ?

There is plenty of VDS3 oil available at a range of reasonable prices . Any thoughts on the following ?

MANNOL 20L TS-4 SHPD 15W40 ENGINE OIL ACEA E7/A3/B4 VOLVO VDS 3 RLD-2 MAN M3275 4036021166445 | eBay
.
High Performance Mixed Fleet Vection 15w-40 Engine Oil ACEA E7 Volvo VDS 3 20LT | eBay
.

Well now, you found some unknown on EBay. Now I dont want to be difficult but the whole purpose of moving away from Volvo was so I could put something better in and not take a punt.

I have used the Smith and Allan oil the last two oil changes and nothing bad has happened.

It may be “ unknown “ to you Bruce but so what ?
Martyns link is what I currently have in now as I discovered it in a Swiss agri shop .
MAN make it easy they do not peddle oil .Instead give pages and pages of approved oils .So we are free to pick n choose .
Depends on the market / Geo location etc .
Mannol is German so ready available in there speaking countries.

That one ( they do various specs like Midland oil I linked ) .....looks fine for you .

I have run Mannol oils in all our car engines/gearboxes manual and autos, boat engines, pressure washers, outboards, all have been fine.

The Mannol engine oil does look very attractively priced . I will change the oil this year in a few weeks time even though we are well under hours due .

Everything, so everything Porto. You have now given a recommendation and Lynallbel has seconded. Until then it could be complete shite, could still be, I dont know. I'd prefer to stay with company names that have some gravitas behind their logo. I'm not after cheap, I only need 23 litres. I can afford to pay for peace of mind.

Bruce, very few oils are manufactured by a named manufacturer and Mannol is merely another bought in base oil with Mannol additives packages added so yes you were correct to be sceptical and research.

In reality companies heavily promoting their oils are misleading customers, Mobil claimed Mobil 1 was the dogs danglies, it was manufactured by Comma at Gravesend and the production line split at the end and some oil went into the Mobil packaging, the rest into Comma packaging; the difference, about 50% if you bought the Comma branded stuff.

Nothing wrong with that and no one is forcing you to buy a brand that you are not happy with.
Sounds like you should stick with Volvo Penta products if you would otherwise be stressed about the possibility of consequences . You can be certain the Volvo Penta oil is the right oil regardless of the source of its manufacture.

For the last 5 years I have taken a project boat and systematically poured money into it to bring it to scratch, why skimp now?
Oils turn into anchor threads in terms of split opinions....except a subtle difference there’s some science to back claims up .
It’s not all just personal amateur s babbling away .
You might be better off researching.
eg the Mannol Martyn linked has a TBT of 9 , the “ midlands oil “ man 3275 @And Volvo VDS 3 spec has a TBT of 15 .
Its a couple of quid less / 20 L .....but it’s the higher TBT number I will go for in aged ( 2003 ) out of warranty engines .Thinking valve seats n all .

Not marine but gives you a flavour of this German oil .

Mannol Energy Combi LL tops German value tests

Bruce likes only the very best oil to fill his newly painted bilge with ?

While looking for something else I found the following Volvo VDS-3 approval for Mannol TS-4 15W40 oil.

Surely any oil advertised as vds3 or any other standard, will need approval from the oe company?

otherwise....I’ll be producing vds3 next week through a deal with my local chippy

I would hope so but some paperwork , even though it might have time expired, is better than none.

Have been used "fleet oil" in 6 Volvo Penta engines and 2 Perkins engines over last three boats and a decade or two.
Most of it probably came from Gravesend via 20 litre drums with several different labels on the outside, including that of the motor factor we buy it from .
Hours on engines ranged from 50 to 5,000.
Not aware of any problems ever on any of the engines while in my care.
All engines did around 120 -180 hours PA
Of the 80 odd boats on our moorings there are probably a few who will only use VP products a handful at best ?
The vast majority of boats are now well into late middle age.
The usual engine mechanical grief on our boats is nearly always cooling systems.
Trying to recall a single case of an engine actually "wearing out" or needing a rebuild due to oil problems.
The word "neglected" is inadequate to describe some the engines on some of our boats. :)
