The hyperbolic systems for the bombers were originally the Gee the which was being developed in the late 1930s, coincidently at the same time a team of Americans were doing the same thing as a method of measuring aircraft speed.
The ships navigation system was first employed on Anglesey in 1942 where Decca demonstrated the system to the MOD and as that test was successful they did another trial on the Moray Firth, one of the transmitters was stationed at Wick Airport for the second test, that was also very successful and Decca went into production to equip the landing ships with the navigation system.
The minesweepers used it to clear 10 lanes through a minefield leading to the beaches on Northern France and the following boats with the troops and equipment were given lane assignments to follow on through the cleared paths all using the navigation system it was called Gee Outfit QH and first used in earnest on the Dieppe raid in August 1942.

You should know that G was only one of the systems and later systems evolved ...

Am I only one that sees a day when dedicated Chart Plotters as we know the now will be old hat and multi media will not just be an alternative - but actually the leader ?
Already we can do so much with tablets and phones that put plotters of even as recent as 10yrs ago to shame ...

It came home to me when I asked to JLR to update my Range Rover Satnav ... guy just said - yes ok - but for the money we charge for what is 'old gear' - you can have a new Apple Play / Android Play system installed that still gives all you have now - including the two DVD players in headrests - PLUS user updated charting for satnav.

The Garmin Echomap 95sv on the 38 ... does it really offer more than my tablet + wifi data etc ?

I think regardless of Garmin / Raymarine etc all hanging on by fingernails ... the writing is starting to be on the wall ....

Imagine this ... I have a 52" SmartTv in the bedroom ... I can display Navionics Boating and Charts on it .. all I need is to supply GPS and AIS via USB and I have a system WOW !! OK .. I don't have a boat to carry a 52" TV ... but see my point ?

I'm acting on memory as a small child now ... but I seem to recall my Father - who was on Bombers during WW2 - saying that G was soon after starting use - 'bent' or interfered with by German counter measures. Needing modification to allow the Pathfinders to continue their work etc.

I'm reading your post on a 40" smart TV in the saloon, the TV is acting as a monitor for the onboard PC (laptop), the two are connected via a HDMI cable and another HDMI cable connects the TV to a soundbar. The laptop has a cheap GPS dongle.

I can have TV sound from the soundbar, or Bluetooth any radio station from an app on my phone (or the laptop).

The TV shows anything from the laptop, internet, email, streamed TV, etc etc. But also, OpenCPN, so i have a 40" plotter for passage planning, it's a bit bulky to take up onto the flybridge though :giggle:

Would be simple enough to send all of the N2K data to the laptop too, but i have other displays for that.

I was thinking I'd read before something similar ... so you answered that.

I was actually laying in bed watching re-runs of the X Files .. while letting my tablet update navionics charts. Out of interest - I flicked through the menu to change to Youtube and realised that I could link the tablet ... I do that to get better F1 TV (still haven't figured out why that is ... ) .. but up it came ..

WOW - I've worked with large paper charts etc. - but that was awesome ..

I hardly ever get to use my 50" TV in the lounge, €99 LG 50" from our internet provider, usually I only get to see the F1 coverage by streaming my PC to it. My son streams F1 to the TV too, using his iPhone but even though it is the same F1 account he gets a different service, must be something to do with his settings, we both prefer the PC to stream as it is smoother and we don't get the buffering his phone does.
Not tried the Boating app on the TV or to see if the USB GPS antenna would work, also must try Waterkaart which is the inland waterway routing software, something like Boating but geared to the inland waterways and it's infrastructure. Would be easier for the wife and I planning our tips out as we can both see the screen without having to squeeze into the computer desk.
The tablet streams to the TV fine so that is always an option.

Yes - F1 TV streams differently sometimes even between Phone, PC and Tablet .... that's what I find .. when Free Practice and I want to watch previous FP - often I can only get highlights on one while other gives full replay ..
