Re: You\'re right, Brendan.

Just tried the 'blowing' test on both my jackets. Difficult to get a nice lip seal around the material /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif they taste nice and salty /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But it is possible to blow a very slow, but noticeable flow of air through the GoreTex one, but not the other. The flow is not great, but I think might be enough to have a slight cooling effect if there was a reasonable amount of wind pressure.

The GoreTex one seems to have a lighter weight of supporting material which may be a factor. I bought it a few years ago, but seem to remember it cost about 600 pounds, whereas the non-GoreTex with heavier material cost somewhere in the region of 200 - 250 I think.

Re: You\'re right, Brendan.

You'd have to have one heck of a wind to get a the same airflow through. The pressure you are exerting over a small area is immense compared to normal winds. If you were standing up in that wind, you'd be knocked over by the force.

Gore-tex is windproof. A factor of 0 to 1 is totally windproof even in winds where you cannot stand.

The supporting material is irrelevant, it's there for wear and tear, the membrane is very thin, and is largely the same.

As a slight aside, is your bivvy bag 100% Gortex, os does it have nylon waterproof underside. The early gortex bags suffered from water seepage in wet conditions when laid on the wet, and lessons were learnt (without getting technical, quite obvious really, as pressure was higher on outside, even though the material is waterproof - the early designers didn't understand the material or the science behind it)

Yup. it's an all-GoreTex one. Certainly gets wet inside when lying in a puddle after a few hours /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You obviously didn't read my earlier post ,about 3rd in the chain. I did buy a cheap suit for £285 and did not stay either dry or warm but I accept the conditions were not ideal ones that I would choose to set sail in.
