Whats in your bag?

Hi,

I was interested to know what was in "your" sailing bag when you set off to join a yacht for one week sailing? Lets say in the British Isles over Easter. Keep it to your "typical" demands when afloat. I ask because I was on the phone to someone who wanted to buy some sailing gear for a week of sailing. When I asked, what else he was taking? He mentioned "binoculors, GPS, head-torch, handheld compass, flare pack, Rules of the Road, Sea sickness tablets!?!?" I would not view this as a "typical bag" rather an 'over indulgent' or 'had a bad experience' sailing bag.

I have the following:

2 Base layer's of no special brand, 10 pairs of thin socks, Dubarry Boots, Henri Lloyd Blizzard Salopettes, Musto Midlayer Jacket, Standard Henri Lloyd TP1 Hi-Fit trousers (Navy), Musto MPX Jacket (Red), Spinlock Deckvest with 3 point tether, handheld GPS and finally a head-torch.

Ja

I don't go on boats where I need 3 layers to sit in the cockpit. ;)

Other essentials include - phone with large memory card and earphones for music on night watches. Passport in case skipper gets lost. 5x strength Stugeron if it's a monohull. Slippers for the watch below. Secret stash of nibbles. Bottle of rum for post-watch cocoa.

I wonder if titanium head torches float? Maybe you can get them some sort of small lifejacket.

Perhaps, in some places you could train a head torch retreiving sea horse?

Oilskins and boots. 8 pairs of socks (or as many as I can find whilst packing), two or three changes of clothes. iPod, mini maglite, leatherman and my musto snug. Maybe a wooly hat, gloves and thermal underwear depending on the time of year.

Toilet bag with Stugeron, various other pills toothpaste soap and shampoo ( I will not sail on a boat without a shower). mp3 player, several paperbacks, oilies, grundies, PJs, shirts socks, trousers, pullovers, several bags of apples, money camera and manicure set. Packets of tissues.

I always reckon that if you can get washed, go to the loo, have clean clothes and breakfast - then you can cope with anything that follows. How squaddies cope with fighting in the jungle when they are filthy I cannot understand.

And no booze .

Blazer+shirt+tie.

At least one other forumite was involved in an "incident" last year that involved five of us leaving a race yacht on an unfamiliar/unintended mooring, blagging a lift from a passing rib, a wade ashore (in LJ+shorts)[0], then a taxi to dinner @the Squadron ;-)

Perhaps I failed that skipper by not packing a tender in my bag - but I did have a knife+3m of small cordage in my pocket.

[0] Remember that slo-mo scene from _The Right Stuff_?

Toothbrush, Brufen and a hammer to flatten any headtorch I find.

Interesting, you must be envisioning those horrid LED White lights? - I have a super head torch with the colours of Red and Green - (white aswell) which works wonders without upsetting the night vision for the rest of ones time on watch.

See I've worked this one out....

The only trousers i ever take out sailing are jeans. After the first time i got soaked in them, i refused to let myself ever get that wet. Now at the slightest hint of moisture, the foulies go on!
Foolproof method of keeping dry and warm.... only because it requires a fool to use that method! :)

Going on from this fred, I've got my dazed kippers course for a week in Easter, would it be bad form to take a bottle of port to keep oneself up-spirited during the week?

My own lifejacket & 3 point safety line. I know they're in good nick. Yours might be, but I'd hate to find out they aren't!

Craghopper trousers cos they cut the wind and dry quickly. Never jeans cos they don't keep you either warm or cool except when you want the opposite and take forever to dry.

At least one more layer than I think I'll possibly need.

Sun hat & sunscreen

Thinsulate hat & neck warmer from by biking days (compact & warmer than a scarf) & breathable ski gloves for helming when it's pissing down or the sea's chucking lumps of itself at me - even in summer. I like to be warm & dry!

Fingerless sailing gloves to protect my office soft hands from nasty things like ropes

Head torch, but only for fixing stuff, not to wear around on watch crew

Small tool pouch - shackle key, fid, leatherman, adjustable spanner, knife & sharpener, mini maglite
