this thread puts me in mind of "stealing" my dad's boat as a kid. he Always knew what I was up to, but didn't tell me for years. - Decades. So many memories of tinkering on it with him at our mud berth just by Cobden bridge in southampton.
We had a couple of aborted IOW attempts in it as a family. First time it got there was with just me on board, ridiculously slowly as I had no money for fuel and no real idea how far the tank would take me. Once I got there I had absolutely no idea what to do next, I never gave a thought to mooring, traffic, or anything else, so I just turned back.
I was about 12, and to be alone on that little thing, looking very much like the OP's boat with a 20hp Johnson on the back, I had a mix of trepidation, occasional terror, and absolute sheer mad joy that if I had drowned that day then at least I would have started living. it was all downhill from there after I discovered women.
