What is it and can I find a use for it?

In which case "Stolen from the NHS", or at least taken out the packet needlessly since it wasn't then used. Don't tell your Manager - you might be cut!
(Glad it wasn't contaminated - otherwise your laptop would have needed a full virus scan!)

Bugga, long reply and lost it all, boo hoo. Not much needlessly opened or wasted these days, trust me on this. Operating gowns, gloves and swabs (they WERE opened mistakenly) helped to keep me clean for my oil and filter change on the diesel Passat, though. Let's just say that they were "recycled".
I do a lot of that, recycling stuff to avoid waste.......well I think it's better than chucking it unused, wouldn't you agree?

Thinking about covers for bottled gas but then again this is usually piped which reminds me of a wonderful story.
Many years ago I worked in a Hospital-Hope Hospital Salford.
It was one of those old Victorian Hospitals and I was there as they began to build the new Hospital-3 tower blocks linked by sky walk ways-so operating theatres with positive pressure ventilation system on top floor linked direct to intensive care and high dependency unit in next block-of course they never built the next block.
Then there was the piped gas to all wards and theatres BUT the plumber had done a bad job and it was leaking anasthetic gases into the building and had to be switched of-I worked there for four years in the early 80s and it remained switched off.
Sorry to digress.

Is it out of a sucky blowy thingy that the anaesthetist might use ??
I was, of course, poking fun at the OP. Recycling is cool!

While the anaesthetist may well be desirous of a sucky blowy thing to keep he/she amused while the surgeon is busy f****ing around, I think elaborating would get us banned from the forum. So I won't! The mind boggles, though...

The items under discussion are of course, as already stated, operating room light handle covers to keep the surgeon sterile. Previously ORs would have detachable handles which need sterilised - there's one on each side of the camera at the top of the image below:
SGHDSU.jpg

The sterile green plastic covers slide over the top of the handles.

I might as well tell the joke, before somebody else does:
On a transatlantic flight, a call goes out, "Is there an Anaesthetist available?" An anaesthetist duly appears.
"What's the problem? Is there a Medical Emergency?"
"No - but there's a surgeon in 1st Class needs his light adjusted..."

Well this has been fun. I have also learned how to use Photobucket better!

My virtual prize for new use, is to Lakesailor for his suggestion for using these as crew retainers. They would need to be filled with something to make them solid. Maybe some unused bone cement..........

They are indeed light handle covers. They are put on at the start of each operation and removed at the end. They are often not touched during the operation so bringing them home for recycling is not an infection risk. Since they are otherwise binned, I do not think this represents theft!

Thanks for everyone's contribution
