Just heard yet another ship aground on Tricolor 70000tonnes of kerosene this time!! Whats the point of COL REGS if comercial shipping cant avoid a well known hazzard . Obvious no one on watch! I think the only rule us sailors can adopt is to steer clear of these maniacs!! Hang the bloody captains thats what I say.

What a nob this skips must feel like. The damn thing's been there for over 2 weeks, some terribly nice chap / lady gives everyone a buzz once an hour "just in case" you don't know that there's a rather large lump of bright (maybe not so bright now!) red metal sitting there, there are 5 buoys around it, the Froggies are meant to be patrolling it ("meant") and the fool still has a pop at it. There was an awefully nice gent interviewed on radio 4 this morning who suggested that dodgems was a slightly extreme word to describe what was going on, I just reckon they've invented a new game, who can get on and off the fastest (ooh er) without putting a hole in their tub.

What worries me is that the French warship apparently called the Vicky to warn of the danger he was heading into, but was ignored! Bloody hell!!! What chance do we stand if we get in the way of one of these blokes?

No idea? Both Gris Nez and Dover claim to be putting out warnings once an hour. You say the French Navy say they were sending out a message. Either the skipper was having a quick 40 winks and left his dog stearing in the most congested waters on the planet, or the authorities were not quite as on the ball as they say, someone is telling porkies

What do you want to bet this is a classic case of steaming between waypoints with an autopilot on? GPS has become more accurate, surprise surprise four ships (that's right FOUR) have managed to collide at this point.

Could someone kindly post here the latitude and longitude of the wreck of the Tricolour. The media go on about it, but never even try and state the position, even in layman terms. As for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency web site - not a word.
Meanwhile remember the bureaucrats (not the sailors) revel in these emergencies, which ensure employment in the years ahead.

Not only are there 5 bouys rounds it, theres also a Racon and if you have NavTex (as all SOLAS vessels must) you'll be bored of reading the "Dangerous Wreck which covers and uncovers" message! It does make you wonder if there was anyone on the bridge and if there was had his guide dog dozed off!

I would not bet my granny’s old false teeth. But having got there they still have eyes.

I believe leaving the dog in charge of the bridge may amount to breach of colregs.

Agreed Pat, except my little dog would have noticed the French broadcasts, the special bouys, the flashing lights, the attendant warship, the repeat broadcasts on Dover and Thames coastguard and the articles published in newspapers throughout the countries surrounding the Dover Straights. Have we missed anything?

boat crew probably don't understand english or french well. Can probably cope with everyday communications when entering port when they expect it. Have been 'driving' boat for weeks, and out of contact with YBW, internet, newspapers. Skipper is probably only one with full working knowledge of languages and regs and he's tied down talking to company about cost cutting


Crew would see French military boats as yet another boat in channel. Probably see little on radar (it's sunk, and buoys probably not very big) and I haven't seen any thing yet to say what the buoys in place around the wreck are? Cardinal markers that would give hint about which way to navigate, or just anything they could lay their hands on that had handy flashing lights?

Complacent, out of touch,and not expecting big hulk of metal in their way back to food, women and wine at next port. They're human, underpaid, understaffed and not to be totallly blamed until someone comes up with a better way of globally policing the waterways of the world.

It's not impossible, the airways have managed it, but cargo vessels don't endager hundreds of passengers

I can hardly believe it. Regular VHF warnings from Dover CG and Cross Griz Nez. French warship sailing alongside shouting at them and they still hit the bloody thing!
Maybe if the 70,000 tons of Kero had gone up it might have solved a problem for all commercial shipping i.e. blown up the boat that had no effective watch and removed the wreck it was sitting on<s>
It beggars belief that 70,000+ tons doing 17 knts without a proper watch in the most congested seaway in the world can happen.
Maybe what needs to be done is employ a yottie as a lookout on these boats whilst they are in the TSS at least we know how to keep an effective lookout, the expirence comes from years of avoiding other "commercials" not obeying the MAIN ColRegs Rule?

However my guess is that the casualty is in the area of the West Hinder and/or Bergues bank. This zone has a complicated traffic direction plot.
Meanwhile this is surely NOT in the English Channel as continuously reported. More like the North Sea, though Dover Strait (extreme north of) would be a fair description.
One wonders what angle to the stream and steamer track the wreck lies.
