Well if they are both around, the car will be more likely to start

Yep - that and a quick check around the fuel filters - then clean & set the points, a squirt of WD40 up into the HT lead connection, and you're good to go for another 20 years ...
Oh - and don't forget to top-up the gearbox oil.
If a Seagull doesn't start by the 3rd pull - start looking around for the reason.
Half-an-hour's basic maintenance once a year is all it takes.
