What's this leading to ?

Well I know you're only catheterising, but for the unininitiated a weather dog, or sun dog, is a multicoloured teardrop shaped blob exactly 22.5 deg to the side of the sun, seen at dawn or dusk, probably a small section of a solar halo. In my experience it presages dirty weather, from the rough direction where it is seen.
