I suppose there's no answer to this (apart from earplugs!) but it can be very annoying sometimes to hear a constant loud slapping noise of water against the hull in the for'd cabin when say, moored to a mooring buoy. We don't seem to hear the same amount of noise in a marina but it's most annoying when tied on to a visitors' mooring, if overnighting somewhere different.

Aha!! Not tried the old reverse mooring trick?? Tie up at the stern so bow heads away from wind, a bit unorthodox, but it works.

Thats why the main cabin on a raggie is down aft, and the crew are consigned to the forepeaks, then some idjut invented the sugar scoop stern, so you get a similar slap from the stern!

Re:Bin there heard that.

Aha thats fine until tide turns and the boat is looking the other way.
My advice is the get very drunk method of having a silent night.
Story is that Princess had a few complaints about this problem and altered the bow strakes, did not make any difference at all apparently.
Only real answer to get very old very quickly and get a Broom with a back bedroom.

2 things to do to cut this noise out

1 Some of 3Ms lovely anti resonance coating to stop the vibration echoing down the hull
2 Thinsulate rolled into the forward area which will cut out the noise leaving you a peaceful nights sleep.

Pm me if you want some more explanation on this.

Zacktly!!
Whatever is causing the slapping, whether tide or wind, it will be up your props, not on your bow.

I fully endorse Col.

Stern too does the trick. I also find when at anchor the stern find sthe wind and there is much less swinging thru 90 degrees that you get when pivoting from the bow.

Of course this only applies in calmish conditions.....

12' x 4' piece of 4mm rubber dangled from the bows with 2' of the 4' submerged in the water. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Glad you added the 'calmish conditions' rider to that. I can think of a few occassion where stern to anchoring would probably have left us swamped.

Funny - I was going to post on exactly the same issue.
Our new Fairline is a very "slappy", even in the Marina, especially when wind and tide are on the bow.
Now I've slept on a lot of boats over the years but I've never heard anything like this - it's more of banging and resonating than a comforting slap slap.
It's doing my head in!!! So much so that I am struggling to enjoy the boat at the moment!
Dom - I've PM'ed you re your post.

I rather like the sound of slapping against the hull and of straining ropes. I suppose I'm just used to it. It helps me sleep.

Lucky you! Do you find the baby oil helps or in your experience is Vaseline better or are you in favour of letting nature take its course?

I am confused now as to the benefits of the use of artificial lubrication - so many different opinions. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
