Can anyone point me in the right direction to a how to guide for the fuel pump timing on these engines, and also where I can get a workshop / service manual?

Thanks

You will need the timing pin and a DTI gauge , metric dial and the adapter to screw into the injector pump, you will then need the pump lift figure , this information is in the engine manual but sadly it’s split into different parts which you have to buy separately. You can hire the tools from some Volvopenta dealers , it’s NOT a diy job .

I question why you want to do this .

The boat was bought not running and turned out it had a broken valve, no idea why. The head was stripped and rebuilt with new valves and the turbo, fuel injection pump and injectors were sent for reconditioning.

The engine is out of the boat just now and it seems the timing is also off, this has not been touched by us as yet. The main crankshaft pulley dimple mark never matches the gear above it with the double dimples no matter how many revolutions are done. The larger upper 3rd cog does match as can be seen on the images. We have got a workshop manual now although not very descriptive and easy to follow with limited details.

For a start you will need to take the sump off , the sump must be taken off before the timing cover so you can fit the gasket correctly.
Unbolt the gear with the two sets of double marks it’s an idler gear that runs on a hub , set the crank so that it’s 1 Mark is between the two , then turn the camshaft to align with the other Mark. Refit the injection pump gear , you can only fit that one way as the four bolt holes only correspond one way in the injection pump flange .
