Recently upgraded our boat from the Yanmar - Mercruiser combination to VP. I knew my way around the quirky combination of the Jap - American partnership and if I had a problem I could always find someone who had already solved it on the internet. As for for my new VP experience this does not seem to always be the case. I've searched this forum and couldn't find an answer to my problem, apologies if its been posted before, but thought I'd ask the question.

My 2008 Bavaria is twin D4-300 with DPH-A drives. I am replacing both starboard side (ss) trim rams due to leaking seals (I tried taking the end caps off, but to no avail, posted on many forums by others) so have no choice but to remove and renew/exchange. I have a query about the port side (ps) trim ram pin that has the trim sensor fitted to it. On my DPH-A drives, ss I have a ram trim pin that has an 8mm hex headed pin. I easily removed this with a bit of pentrating oil externally and wound the pin in and out a few times to get it moving. A note to others - the pin is secured with a small grub screw that bites into the head of the main pin. Remove this first and an 8mm hex head drive with your favourite ratchet and extension will get the main pin out. Oddly enough the main pin was also thread locked, so two methods of securing the pin, I was taught that only one was needed unless it was subject to always falling out, which doesn't seem to be the case located in a parallel plane,

The ps trim ram pin appears to have a splined head instead of a hex one, which is probably so you can tweak the trim sender unit (which has a hex head). So my question is, does anyone know how to remove the ps trim ram main pin? Is it via the splined head, or is there a smaller hex (or splined) head machined deeper into the pin. Reason for asking is, that whilst I have access to get the tools in there, my 6' 4" frame prevents me from seeing anything so working a bit blind with torches and mirrors!

By the way for anyone looking to overhaul/remove/replace these trim rams, they really are a bugger to sort out whilst still on the boat, and look to be best sorted off of it. Never had this issue with my Mercruisers but hey ho.

Thanks in advance.

The pin should pull out after removing the sensor, you may have to spray some penetrating oil on it and work it back and forth with a tool to match the splines. You may have already seen that the is a small locking screw on the trim cylinder which locks it to the shaft so it rotates with the cylinder, that needs to come out.

Thanks spannerman, I really didn't think it was going to be that easy and thought there must be a really expensive VP tool to do it! Thats the trouble working blind and not having done it before.

Will take a look this evening - thanks again (y)
