As someone who generally b**gers about with boats a lot and as a RNLI Sea Check Advisor it never ceases to amaze me how many boat owners out there don’t have either a VHF operators licence or ships station licence.
Now before everyone starts jumping up and down about all the different scenarios regarding using VHF in an emergency situation, I AGREE. If there is a set aboard and you’re in the doo doo then use it! Licensed or not.
When I’m in sea check mode I would NEVER DREAM of telling someone off for not having the correct paperwork. I do however remind them of the regulations and “suggest” that they “might” like to do something about it.
BUT, that doesn’t take away from the fact that both the operator and the boat need a licence and the penalties for having neither are very high.
As far as I am aware, and I will stand corrected on this, the current possible penalties are.
1. £2000 fine
2. Confiscation of the equipment.
3. Confiscation of the vessel that the equipment is in.
4. 2-year jail sentence.
5. Or ALL of the above.
Why oh why would anyone risk their pride and joy, just because they won’t buy a 20 quid licence every year and go and do one course, which last a lifetime?
In the current climate of the Treasury telling all the other government depts that getting money from us minions and justifying that department’s existence is a standard requirement, it helps with the (stealth) tax situation don’t you know. It would be a foolish person that did not think that they would not come after us!
After all we are all rich boat owners and as such can easily afford to pay the fines.
