I fitted one on my Contessa 32 last year in the Aft locker. No silencer and its quite outside. I used a SS flexible pipe for the exhaust lagged in the red stuff. It gets extremely hot so I re routed wiring and anything that could come in to contact with exhaust. My batteries are maintained by only a 50 watt panel and I have no problems running the heater for several days none stop in winter. I did not fit an air intake pipe and was not too fussed about ventilation as I believed the heater was so far away in the stearn. big mistake. Ive now fitted an air intake pipe from a very well ventilated source. Its also important to have ventilation for the cabin.

Because you will soon tire of topping up the heater fuel tank (I know I did when my boat one had a separate tank) and because your 40watt panel won’t keep up with the heaters electrical demand in the colder months when you’ll be using the heater.

As an example, my small VW camper has a 2kw heater that comes on once a day for one hour to pre-heat van during cooler months. The van has a 200w panel on roof connected to a 50ah lithium house battery and that setup won’t keep up with the heaters demand. Once a month or so I charge lithium battery from the alternator to get it full again. This in the Uk. I’m assuming your winter sun levels are not too dissimilar to ours, no?

All info goes into the 'pot' ...

Just to give perspective ... I've boated in Baltic since 2000 ... and all boats I sailed were without heaters ... basically we ignored the month or so at start and end of season. I don't really have intention to change much from that ... but would be nice to have warm cabin when going to 'bed' !
Of course if it works well ... I will fall into trap of it being used more !

The engine tank is 40L ... its only a Yanmar 2GM20 ... unlike my other boat with the 4-107 ... 70L

The swap was initiated based on the LPG system being disabled. Not on any wish to cold weather sail !

I also have a separate tank. I prefer to keep my engine fuel tanks as full as I can and would hate to end up running out of fuel cos ive used the heater too much.

As I said - my 'planned' use is not to be that much to warrant larger tank ... 10L at max - should give 20hrs+ .... probably more as thermostat kicks in etc.

But we all know that use will likely be far more once the joy of being warm'er is felt...

Looks same as Paul's ... just different supplier ...

The first thing I have to do once I recover from festivities .. is to empty that locker and sketch out the installation ... so far I'm not sure on pipe lengths
Different to the one i suggested, looks nice though.

I hadn’t realised someone had already put a link to my exhaust, apols. I would agree with those that say they’re not essential though. Where I berth it’s a ‘good value’ marina and so lots of live-aboards with Chinaspachers. You can tell instantly as you walk past whether they have silencer or not, but it’s not that bad really when they don’t. With my 5kw Chinaspacher on tickover, with the above silencer, you can’t hear it from the pontoon at all.

I had the pedal to the metal on mine yesterday, no silencer. (I got in the water to scrub off, needed the warmth afterwards) It’s not disturbing from 10ft, though it did sound quite loud when the exhaust was 50cm above my head.

At home port - I don't think anyone's going to be bothered about a bit of exhaust noise ... being Baltic Moor - the exhaust will be directed to the harbour .... plus the amount of time it will run given that we have a Continental climate will be short.

Silencer or no ... I found out this morning that the Owner of the yard that did the work on my 25 - he fitted similar unit to his Banner 31 2 yrs ago .. so I plan to have a look later when weather is better ...
He will also be able to show first hand any changes / replacements he made ...

My main 'want to see' is the lagging / division of hot from gear etc.

All info gained will be posted here of course ... to add to the good info already given by you guys.

On the subject of lagging, make sure you lag the heater ducting or you lose half of your heat keeping locker toasty warm.

Lets say - I am going to have two outlets ... one in main cabin ... another in forecabin ..... this will mean having to restrict first vent ....

What would be maximum run of outlet pipe before first vent ? Lets say I was to have first or only vent at fwd end of main cabin ... lagging in locker ...... but then rest unlagged to warm the engine bay which sits between fwd end of aft bunks and then along in cabin ... ??

My thoughts are to try and sort with one outlet ... ???

I have two outlets on my 5kw, one to saloon and one to fore cabin. Saloon run is approx 3 metres from heater, forecabin run is 1.5 metres, via a y-shaped splitter near heater with a flap for each branch so you can decide how much heat goes to each area of boat. Like this but mine is Y shaped for better flow:

UK 75mm Air Vent Ducting T Piece Outlet Connector & Valve Flap For Diesel Heater | eBay

Your best bet for max ducting/fuel line/etc runs is to download an Eber D4 manual, upon which the Chinaspacher’s are modelled.
